This is the first year ever that we have had to ask you to please dig deep into your pockets and help us with the work we do. So many dogs this year have needed expensive veterinary treatment and as we are all aware, prices are spiralling. We still ask for an £85 donation & invariably that's what we get! Please help us to carry on the rescue & welfare of this wonderful breed of dog. Just £3.00 per month, paid directly into our account will make such a difference. Or a one off donation of anything that you can spare. Please help us to continue helping them!

Contact us for details for direct debits. Paypal on the front of our website or cheques can be made payable to SPRWUK and posted. PLEASE DO NOT SEND CASH.

WHERE HAVE ALL THE ADOPTERS GONE?

Every week I email or post out at least three or four adoption packages, however recently none have been returned?

If you have contacted me recently about adoption and have either never received the paperwork or have changed your mind, PLEASE contact me and let me know. We have several dogs desperate for good homes and because of the way we work, we never place all dogs up for adoption onto the front of the website. We do our best to match the right dog to the right home and feel that by placing all dogs up for re-homing onto our front page, we may not always find that perfect match.

A sample of dogs gives adopters some idea of the dogs we do have, but by no means all of them, so PLEASE DO return your form if you want to give one of these fabulous dogs a loving home.

Thank you

I need someone's help?

We are trying to get this Shar Pei abandoned in Greece , home to a loving foster/permanent home in England . She is being sponsored by a German rescue organisation who are prepared to pay her travel, documentation, inoculations etc but I need someone willing to help me through the procedure of getting her here and someone to take her on arrival, either as a foster home or a foster with a view to adopt. She has been through the most terrible experience and deserves a chance to be happy. She's very loving and loyal despite the cruelty and neglect she's suffered. Are you that special person who can help me? If so, please go to the 'contact us' page and email me.

These Dogs Need Homes

Please, please be sure when you apply to rescue a dog you are either in a stable relationship or you have discussed what would happen to the animal should you break up. It really isn't fair to abandon an animal because your own life is experiencing difficulties. A dog is your companion and friend and when you adopt it is for life. You wouldn't adopt a child and then want to give it back, would you?

This is Hallee & Ronnie...

Ronnie and Haillee are currently in a foster home. They are two of the easiest, sweetest Shar Pei I have ever had the pleasure to befriend and I would rather chew my arm off than separate them! They have a real bond and though like all kids have their moments, they love each other deeply. Ronnie is a big, easygoing lump who loves cuddles, food and sleeping. Haillee is a miniature Pei who loves to run around, likes to lick and is also VERY affectionate. Both are good with adults, children of all ages, babies, other dogs and are even getting used to living with a cat! Homing them together is more like having one and a half dogs in the home than two. They keep each other company and can be left a full working day. PLEASE give this wonderful couple a second chance at a loving, permanent home.

This is Star...

Star is under two years of age and is exhibiting some problems with aggression. Not serious biting, but she has a tendency to snap and is over protective. She can be aloof and tends to want attention when she wants it. She suffers from a lack of training and being spoilt!! I truly believe that an experienced dog owner would find it relatively easy to train her and teach her good manners. She does love to pop her paws on your lap to signal cuddles and she adores rolling on her belly for a tickle which is highly significant as this is submissive behaviour. She is in the South of England, neutered and could make somebody a wonderful pet. She would only be allowed to go to a family with sensitive, animal friendly older children, a single person or a couple with no young children visiting.

This is ScoobyDoo...

Scoobydoo has been in a foster home since coming into rescue and I now feel obliged to give a more accurate assessment of his character. Scooby is VERY strong willed and a physically strong boy. He can be unpredictable around other dogs, wanting to play with some and fight others! I would never trust him around cats, very small dogs or small mammals. He can be quite nervous when meeting new people and does the usual grumbling until he feels secure. I would put him with children but not babies or children of the 'lets stick our fingers up the dog's nose' age. He can be very affectionate and I think he would seriously benefit from living with another dog, probably a female. Scooby really needs to go into his 'forever home' ASAP. He deserves love, patience and a kind home where he will learn to bond and blossom.

This is Bailee...

Bailee is a blue shar pei with Epilepsy who is also blind in one eye. As a puppy a vet botched an entropian op and blinded him. Epilepsy isn't the problem that some people think it is, but the owner has to be fully aware of what they're taking on. As we also have an epileptic Pei we are in an excellent position to explain the dog's needs. Unless you have an existing dog that is very submissive, Bailee should probably live alone, as some normally calm dogs can attack a dog during an Epileptic fit. He's 4 years old, brilliant with babies and children. He is unsure of other dogs, but will lick people to death! He needs a kind, very loving, patient home and will be worth every loving moment given to him.

Most rescue dogs have problems of some sort...

Is YOUR heart big and patient enough to take one of these dogs on ?

THINK BEFORE YOU BUY...

In recent months more and more dogs are coming in to us with varying hereditary problems. ALL of these dogs come with Kennel club registrations and none would be accepted back by the breeder.

The average price paid for these dogs was £1000.00.

It is important that the buyer realise that having a kennel club registration is no guarantee of the health or temperament of a dog.

The Kennel Club is a business. It is NOT a welfare organisation. Breeders are NOT checked. NO BODY visits to see what conditions the dogs are kept in. ANYBODY can register a litter with the Kennel Club if they are prepared to pay to do so. The Kennel Club have no powers to prevent irresponsible breeding. Registration only means that you can show your dog in the show ring; it is NOT a guarantee as to the well being of a pup.

The recent case in the media of over 200 starving, dehydrated Yorkshire Terriers kept in a windowless shed in the most appalling conditions, only found when the 'breeder' died, is testament to this, as was a similar situation with a Labrador breeder last year.

Both Breeders were KC registered!

If you want to buy a puppy, there are certain things you should ask and see before you even consider parting with your cash.

Ask to see BOTH parents. If a dog was brought in for stud ask for the name of the stud dog and make contact with the owner. If the dog shows aggression to you, do NOT buy the pup.

  • Ask to see the full litter with its mum. Check that the bitch is looking healthy and is comfortable with you visiting her young and that the litter looks healthy.
  • You have the right to choose your puppy. Make sure the pup you choose is bright, sociable, interested in its surroundings and playful.
  • Do not take a pup that has mucky eyes, a snotty nose or is listless.
  • Ask about hereditary conditions such as Amyloidosis, Shar Pei fever, swollen hock syndrome and Demodectic mange. If necessary get the breeder to put in writing that, to the best of their knowledge that neither the Dam nor the Sire carries any of these conditions.
  • Ask if, in the event of a serious health or temperament problem, they will take the puppy back?
  • Ask if you can contact owners of puppies previously bred by the breeder, to attest to the temperaments and health of the dogs that have been bred.
  • Take your new puppy to your vet within the first few days and have it checked.

By following these simple steps, you will help to reduce the number of dogs that are given up to rescues

A good breeder will vet you thoroughly; you have the right to do the same.

==================================================

We are hearing more and more often of dogs being stolen. It is a cruel and heartbreaking trend.

To help protect your dog, get it microchipped and Neutered.

A neutered animal CAN NOT be stolen for puppy farming and helps protect your pet.

If you ALWAYS have a collar on your dogs with a tag stating that they are neutered, they are less likely to be stolen.

============================

Please do not ask us to return calls to a mobile.

We rely solely on donation and can not afford huge telephone bills.

THANK YOU

Please register for adoption or fostering.

You will find the forms to download on our 'please help page'.

Please Do it today

=======================================

Our Organisation asks for a ten pound registration fee before people go on the list to adopt a dog.

WHY ?

Well, a lot of our dogs come to us with various health problems and many need operations. It would be unfair of us to knowingly allow someone to adopt a dog, aware that it should undergo surgery.

The registration fee means there is always some money available.

The other monies we rely upon is Donation, but sadly we have discovered that some people, once receiving a rescue dog from us, just don't want to cough up!

It is very strange that these same people, when asked why a donation isn't forthcoming, nearly always become abusive and nasty???

They don't care that without the donations, we would eventually be unable to rescue any more dogs.

It's a case of 'I've got my dog, who cares about the rest?'

WELL WE DO !

Please, when you apply to adopt you must not only take into consideration the yearly jabs, dog food, insurance etc; but also that you WILL be expected to give a reasonable donation. Most other 'rescue' organisations CHARGE you for an animal.

We Don't..So don't let us down...Please.

Please contact Roma if you can help. See our "Please Help" section for details and forms.

=========================================

How can you help?

Well there are several ways. You can help by letting us know when a dog is in need. You can help us transport animals. You can help us raise funds. You can help us by giving your time and expertise about the breed.

There are so many ways you can help and we too can help you. We will find good loving homes, We will take responsibility for veterinary care for fostered dogs, (where funds are available) We will make the phone calls, co-ordinate the rescue, find understanding foster homes for behavioural problems so they can be re-trained and we will make sure these wonderful sensitive dogs get homed with people who will love them for the rest of their lives.

We have no committees. No axes to grind. No politics. We just CARE. Please feel free to contact us with any enquiries. We look forward to hearing from anyone interested in helping us.
