Welcome to Shar-Pei-Rescue & Welfare UK

Cassy

Cassy has come to us from a loving home where her owners loved her enough to let her go. Tragically half of her litter mates were born dead and she was born with a break in her right front leg, which despite treatment has left her with a deformed leg and paw. She is only 8 weeks old and my vet believes that hopefully we can save the leg. Despite being very generous in his prices for rescue dogs, she will have to see a specialist and her treatment could run into thousands. The sooner she starts treatment the better her chances………PLEASE, help us to provide the operations she needs. She has her whole life ahead of her and we need YOUR help to give her the best quality of life that we can.

==================

As with everyone the 'credit crunch' hits hard, but those of you who have signed up to a small regular donation to Shar Pei Rescue and Welfare UK, have meant the world to those dogs we have been able to save. It doesn't matter if it is 3 pounds a week/month.. that continuous little dribble of cash is the difference between life and death for some dogs and we beg you, if you haven't already done so, PLEASE set up a regular monthly donation to help us continue our work. It is a sad fact that many who have to give up their dogs promise that they will do this, however the minute we home the dog, we never hear from them again!!

Please, if you would like to set up a regular donation contact Roma 01323726462 or go to the 'Contact Us' page and send us an email.

Your donation CAN mean the difference of life or death for these dogs. THANK YOU.

_new

This year, we had another Shar -Pei move into our home. See his photos & read the story of his creation here.

==================

All dog welfare agencies are being hit hard by recession. So many dogs are being abandoned in shelters or merely turfed out to fend for themselves, from one end of the country to the other. Donations stop, as does those coming forward to adopt or foster. A dog truly IS a companion for its lifetime and is far less expensive than rearing children.? Dogs are being put to sleep in record numbers all over the country, which means that those of us who specialise in certain breeds suffer more than most. PLEASE think carefully about adoption. We will help you with information, training, health and general queries. They really are the most loyal, loving companions, so PLEASE come forward to adopt or foster.

==================

PLEASE do not attempt to re-home any of these dogs unless your commitment is for the life of the dog.

These Dogs Need Homes

Please, please be sure when you apply to rescue a dog you are either in a stable relationship or you have discussed what would happen to the animal should you break up. It really isn't fair to abandon an animal because your own life is experiencing difficulties. A dog is your companion and friend and when you adopt it is for life. You wouldn't adopt a child and then want to give it back, would you?

This is Lloyd...

Lloyd is 5 years old, is neutered and micro chipped. He's a super boy used to living with cats and another little dog and is used to small children. He isn't brilliant with other dogs outside of the home but could be trained to ignore them. He's very loving and affectionate, is good with strangers coming into the home and travels well in a car. Lloyd's plight IS urgent. He is desperate for a permanent, forever home. He is in the Kent area.

This is Ghengis and Kublai Kahn...

Ghengis and Kublai Kahn are sadly coming back into rescue. They are a pair of wonderful boys, brilliant with children, but their dad moved and sadly Kublai has discovered sheep and keeps putting his life at risk by escaping and chasing them. The locals are up in arms and we can not risk him being shot. Ghengis is a blonde 6 yr old, a real character, good off lead. He's a professional thief and WILL steal off work surfaces, loves the company of older children and other dogs. He adores attention and his brother Kublai, affectionately known as Kubby.

Kublai is a violet brush coat who loves being petted but will not demand attention. He's an unassuming chap who is happy on his own, watching the world go by. He can suffer from a skin condition if not correctly fed and may need bathing (which he likes) if his skin flares up. He needs to be kept away from ALL livestock as he loves chasing and hunting. He is good with other dogs off lead but can bristle if he meets another male whilst on the lead. These two need to go together and are in Devon.

This is Dudley...

Dudley is a lovely boy of 3and neutered. He's good with very young children and can be left a full working day with no break. He travels well in a car and when strangers visit he can initially be wary but is friendly. He can be over boisterous with other dogs off lead. He's a very placid, intelligent dog who works well with praise and loves learning. He would be the perfect companion dog and would benefit from living with another dog. He's in Hertfordshire.

This is Harvey...

Harvey is only a baby at 14 months. He is neutered and chipped but has problems with his stomach as well as suffering from separation anxiety. This is a condition so many dogs suffer from, however with patience and dedication it can be cured within 4 days. Just like anything else, if you do it properly, you only have to do it once…fanny about, get bored, lose momentum, and your dog will destroy your home forever!! He is obviously a nervous dog and can be very grumbly with strangers and other animals, but he was very, very ill when a pup with Parvo Virus so he missed out on a great deal of socialisation. Despite being a bully with other dogs, I actually believe he would benefit from living with another dog with the right temperament. He needs love and patience…is he for you? He is in the Crosby area.

This is Missie & Milly...

Missie and Milly are two lovely sisters aged 23 months. Both dogs are not well socialised and are not happy around young children. When visitors come to the house, they are both used to being muzzled, until such times as they have relaxed. Millie is a very loving dog and loves attention, however she is very nervous and is worried by all sorts of noises..motorbikes, lawnmowers, fireworks etc she loves to be stroked and is highly protective of family and home. Missie loves affection, especially having her ears and belly rubbed. She isn't keen on strangers and is protective of her sister Milly. Both dogs can be left a full working day and need to be homed together.

This is Bear & Mia...

Bear and Mia are two beautiful dogs who need to be re-homed together, as they have a strong bond. Bear is a natural blue, Horsecoat. Is four years old and can be shy and wary of strangers. He is very,very loving and prefers cuddles to food once he trusts you. Mia is a cream horsecoat who will have her fourth birthday on Nov 22 nd . She is very playful and wags her tail from morning till night. They are both in good health and neutered. Their owner is devastated at having to give them up. But circumstances change and she now feels that it would be kinder on them to let them go. It is her wishes that they ONLY be homed as a pair.

This is Oliver...

We only got to save Oliver by a cats whisker and I'm so glad we did! It became a real joint effort to save him, look after him and finally to place him in a safe foster retirement home, until we find the ‘right' mummy or daddy. He's an older gentleman (roughly 7) and is blind in both eyes. He came to us without a collar or a lead…not even a name and he deserves better than that. He's very calm, gentle and affectionate. Good with other dogs and people. A quieter life would suit him, with a couple of 20 minute walks thrown in for good measure. He's a really lovely dog with so much more to give….is he the ‘right' dog for you?

This is Coral...

Coral has been abandoned and you only have to look at her to feel her pain. She's a beautiful girl and it breaks my heart that despite her skin condition, she was obviously bred from, thereby ensuring her babies also suffer from this problem. We will make sure that when she is homed she will have been treated and spayed, but she will always need care of her skin (We give a health sheet with every adoption which gives you cheap ways of maintaining a healthy coat and skin) She's affectionate, good with other dogs and approximately 3/5 years old.

This is Bunny...

Bunny is a lovely affectionate girl but a typical shar pei. She can be aloof and can also grumble when she is unsure, but is not aggressive and you can see the fear in her eyes, where she doesn't understand why she has been abandoned. She too, has obviously served her purpose, and has been a mummy more than once. She is good with other dogs and people, but has not been tested with children or cats. We are due to spay her and then she will be ready to be homed with a family who will give her the love and continual support she needs.

This is Jabba...

Jabba is a beautiful blue, healthy boy but needs a lot of patience and time spent on him. He has spent his whole life in kennels and therefore does not understand the outside world, however I have found through experience, that this breed can easily be re-trained with the ‘right' people. He needs time and patience spent on him and we will give the ‘right' person the support to turn him into a loving pet. He is not aggressive but can grumble and occasionally air snap when frightened. He has never had the socialisation that all dogs need to become the friend that man domesticated them for. He's a lovely boy and at six years old deserves the opportunity to be loved and looked after in a home environment.

PLEASE remember that we do NOT put all the dogs on our books on the website. So often things have gone wrong because the buyer of a dog, liked the look of the dog rather than evaluating it's temperament in relation to their own situation. We try to match the dog to the family, so please, if there is not a dog displayed here it does not mean that we do not have the right shar pei for you.

PLEASE remember, we cannot return calls to mobiles !

Most rescue dogs have problems of some sort...

Is YOUR heart big and patient enough to take one of these dogs on ?

===============================================

THINK BEFORE YOU BUY...

In recent months more and more dogs are coming in to us with varying hereditary problems. ALL of these dogs come with Kennel club registrations and none would be accepted back by the breeder.

The average price paid for these dogs was £1000.00.

It is important that the buyer realise that having a kennel club registration is no guarantee of the health or temperament of a dog.

The Kennel Club is a business. It is NOT a welfare organisation. Breeders are NOT checked. NO BODY visits to see what conditions the dogs are kept in. ANYBODY can register a litter with the Kennel Club if they are prepared to pay to do so. The Kennel Club have no powers to prevent irresponsible breeding. Registration only means that you can show your dog in the show ring; it is NOT a guarantee as to the well being of a pup.

The recent case in the media of over 200 starving, dehydrated Yorkshire Terriers kept in a windowless shed in the most appalling conditions, only found when the 'breeder' died, is testament to this, as was a similar situation with a Labrador breeder last year.

Both Breeders were KC registered!

If you want to buy a puppy, there are certain things you should ask and see before you even consider parting with your cash.

Ask to see BOTH parents. If a dog was brought in for stud ask for the name of the stud dog and make contact with the owner. If the dog shows aggression to you, do NOT buy the pup.

  • Ask to see the full litter with its mum. Check that the bitch is looking healthy and is comfortable with you visiting her young and that the litter looks healthy.
  • You have the right to choose your puppy. Make sure the pup you choose is bright, sociable, interested in its surroundings and playful.
  • Do not take a pup that has mucky eyes, a snotty nose or is listless.
  • Ask about hereditary conditions such as Amyloidosis, Shar Pei fever, swollen hock syndrome and Demodectic mange. If necessary get the breeder to put in writing that, to the best of their knowledge that neither the Dam nor the Sire carries any of these conditions.
  • Ask if, in the event of a serious health or temperament problem, they will take the puppy back?
  • Ask if you can contact owners of puppies previously bred by the breeder, to attest to the temperaments and health of the dogs that have been bred.
  • Take your new puppy to your vet within the first few days and have it checked.

By following these simple steps, you will help to reduce the number of dogs that are given up to rescues

A good breeder will vet you thoroughly; you have the right to do the same.

==================================================

We are hearing more and more often of dogs being stolen. It is a cruel and heartbreaking trend.

To help protect your dog, get it microchipped and Neutered.

A neutered animal CAN NOT be stolen for puppy farming and helps protect your pet.

If you ALWAYS have a collar on your dogs with a tag stating that they are neutered, they are less likely to be stolen.

============================

Please do not ask us to return calls to a mobile.

We rely solely on donation and can not afford huge telephone bills.

THANK YOU

Please register for adoption or fostering.

You will find the forms to download on our 'please help page'.

Please Do it today

=======================================

Our Organisation asks for a ten pound registration fee before people go on the list to adopt a dog.

WHY ?

Well, a lot of our dogs come to us with various health problems and many need operations. It would be unfair of us to knowingly allow someone to adopt a dog, aware that it should undergo surgery.

The registration fee means there is always some money available.

The other monies we rely upon is Donation, but sadly we have discovered that some people, once receiving a rescue dog from us, just don't want to cough up!

It is very strange that these same people, when asked why a donation isn't forthcoming, nearly always become abusive and nasty???

They don't care that without the donations, we would eventually be unable to rescue any more dogs.

It's a case of 'I've got my dog, who cares about the rest?'

WELL WE DO !

Please, when you apply to adopt you must not only take into consideration the yearly jabs, dog food, insurance etc; but also that you WILL be expected to give a reasonable donation. Most other 'rescue' organisations CHARGE you for an animal.

We Don't..So don't let us down...Please.

Please contact Roma if you can help. See our "Please Help" section for details and forms.

=========================================

How can you help?

Well there are several ways. You can help by letting us know when a dog is in need. You can help us transport animals. You can help us raise funds. You can help us by giving your time and expertise about the breed.

There are so many ways you can help and we too can help you. We will find good loving homes, We will take responsibility for veterinary care for fostered dogs, (where funds are available) We will make the phone calls, co-ordinate the rescue, find understanding foster homes for behavioural problems so they can be re-trained and we will make sure these wonderful sensitive dogs get homed with people who will love them for the rest of their lives.

We have no committees. No axes to grind. No politics. We just CARE. Please feel free to contact us with any enquiries. We look forward to hearing from anyone interested in helping us.
