*****

We have decided to scrap the registration fee but increase our adoption fee to £125.00. The average dog that comes to us costs the rescue in excess of £200 for transportation, vets fees etc and we are still well below the average breed rescue fees. Sorry, but if we do not raise our fees, there won't be a rescue...times are indeed hard

Halee's case has highlighted the sad truth that people say my phones are constantly busy? ......It is because I am working to 'save' dogs. When the phone is engaged it is because I am helping people to help dogs in many ways.

BE persistent . I AM here, just very, very busy saving lives!

These Dogs Need Homes

Please, please be sure when you apply to rescue a dog you are either in a stable relationship or you have discussed what would happen to the animal should you break up. It really isn't fair to abandon an animal because your own life is experiencing difficulties. Having a baby is not an excuse to to give up a dog. A dog is your companion and friend and when you adopt, it is for life. You wouldn't adopt a child and then want to give it back, would you?

IN THE LAST SIX MONTHS 27,000 DOGS HAVE BEEN ABANDONED????

Rolo

Is a lovely girl who really really needs a new home urgently. She's only young and has just been spayed, but her owner is allergic to her. She can be a little nervous around other dogs and needs to be introduced carefully. Older children would be better around her, not little ones and no cats.

She's a really super dog, young enough to be moulded into the perfect pet. No health problems and very loving and loyal. A lovely little shar pei girl.

Buster

Has come into rescue because sadly his daddy died. He's a neutered, seven yr old who is wonderful with children, even clumsy little ones and people. He has no health problems but isn't great with other dogs. He would have to live in a one dog household, but when out walking WILL ignore dogs and does not lunge or pull to get to them. He's an excellent guard dog who needs a new permanent home through no fault of his own . Please do not consider this dog to be too old, he's got lots of life left in him but is a more relaxed, mature boy.

Douglas

Is a really beautiful boy with the heart of a lion and the nature of a kitten. Sadly he has been moved around rather a lot and has been in foster care for over four months. He's a fantastic boy who will allow children of all ages to play with him and he is very affectionate with his family. He is good with strangers, though an excellent guard dog, castrated, no health problems, fully housetrained and a greatr all rounder. Douglas does not tolerate other dogs, though an older submissive female would probably be fine. He needs a home with land, or a big garden where he can't get into trouble. He REALLY IS a stunning, wonderful dog. He is in the Scottish area.

Deifer

Is a lovely little girl who's mum is giving her up because her circumstances have changed dramatically and she isn't getting the time spent on her that she should. She's a gentle soul, good with children, other dogs and has lived with a cat. She used to have some skin issues, though these seem to have been resolved. She is neutered and will make somebody, with a lot of love to give, the perfect pet.

Wiggle

Is a 3 year old female flowered shar pei who has been placed in kennels with another dog who apparently she fought with. This other dog was possibly one of the most aggressive dogs we've ever come accross, so no wonder she fought him? She's fine with people and easy to handle but typically aloof. She likes a stroke but seems happy to be alone. As kennels are so new to her she has resorted to the shar pei stance of going into herself, though with a bit of time and love i'm sure she will Blossom. She is waiting to be spade but as soon as that is done she'll be ready for her new home.

Crystal

Crystal is a one to two year old pei who is full of fun and very bouncy, who needs her eyes done desperately! She was found as a stray but nobody ever came to take her? She acts like a big puppy and loves a cuddle and a game. She will be fine with children and on meeting another dog seemed confused but not aggressive so my guess is that she would make a great companion for a slightly older male, maybe? She is having an entopean and has just come into season so we will have to wait to neuter her, however this will be done before she goes to her forever home.

Here is Brooke.

She is such a sweetie once she knows you but can be initially wary of new people. She does not like kennels and is finding it a bit hard to settle in but when she is in the office she becomes a bit puppy who loves cuddles and playing with her tennis balls.

Although Brooke is fine with dogs she has previously shown jealousy issues around dogs in her previous home so would be best as an only dog but would still enjoy some doggy companions for her park walks.

She is 3 years old and in good health. She has previously had skin problems but this has been treated.

Toby

Is a really wonderful boy who's story you may have been following on his foster mummy's blog?

http://foster-shar-pei.blogspot.co.uk/

We initially thought he was a traditional meatmouth shar pei, however since veiwing his photographs, we think he is probably a cross. His temperament and selective deafness is definately shar pei; but his size and 'sillyness' is probably some type of Mastiff. Toby is castrated, really fit and healthy and great with kids. He can easily live with another dog but i would suggest a female. He's a gorgeous boy who will make any home a happy one.

Charlie x shar pei

This is Charlie. He is a 2 year old Shar pei cross staffie. He is great with children of any age. He has chased and grabbed a small fluffy dog previously (not a bite but did pull some fluff) but has been fine with all other dogs. Would not put him with another dog due to this but he is fine mixing with them.

Not for cats as will chase them!

Shack

Is a lovely friendly boy desperate for a home or another place in kennels as he has been in Heathrow quaranteen kennels for far too long and is at risk from PTS?? He's friendly, good with other dogs and would probably be fine with children. All in all he will make some family a wonderful pet! For more details on Shack:

PLEASE remember that we do NOT put all the dogs on our books on the website. So often things have gone wrong because the buyer of a dog, liked the look of the dog rather than evaluating it's temperament in relation to their own situation. We try to match the dog to the family, so please, if there is not a dog displayed here it does not mean that we do not have the right shar pei for you.

PLEASE CHECK OUT LATEST APPEALS ON 'OUR FRIENDS' PAGE

In These Hard Times We really NEED Adopters!!

Don't just read about them..home them!! Broaden your criteria, recognise an older dog

is less trouble, consider two as companions instead of one!

Don't just think about it...DO IT...or dogs die!!!

PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR DETAILS ON ADOPTION ON MY MOBILE.

This is kept for emergencies only. Thank you

We just can not afford to return calls to a mobile number. Please leave a land line number or try again.

Thank you

PLEASE READ

I have received some very disturbing comments from several people who have contacted another rescue about the behaviour of their dogs. The person who runs the rescue has advised that they grab hold of the skin around the dogs face and physically lift them off the ground. He also advises pinning the animal to the floor using your body weight. These practices are painful and very stupid and could result in a very nasty dog bite. If I ever hear of anyone doing this to a Shar Pei Rescue and Welfare UK dog, I will personally see that the dog is removed from the home and re-housed. This treatment is cruel and dangerous. DON'T DO IT !

The Pet Corrector

For many of you who have contacted me about their dogs fighting, you will know that I send out a piece called ‘fighting dogs' which recommends the use of a CO2 fire extinguisher as a training aid. It stops fighting immediately and ultimately becomes a deterrent to aggression starting again. So often I have thought that what we really need is a pocket size extinguisher for out walking etc…and then I discovered

THE PET CORRECTOR'.

This amazing, easy to use and reliable aid to training your dog, can now be purchased directly from Shar Pei Rescue and Welfare UK.

50ml £6.75 plus £1.99 p&p or the larger 200ml £10.99 p&p £2.99.

(at present we only have the larger size)

Please send postal order or cheque made out to: SPRW UK to Five Levels Cottage, Burrow wall, Burrowbridge, Somerset, TA70JQ

PLEASE remember, we can not return calls to mobiles !

Most rescue dogs have problems of some sort...

Is YOUR heart big and patient enough to take one of these dogs on ?

===============================================

THINK BEFORE YOU BUY...

In recent months more and more dogs are coming in to us with varying hereditary problems. ALL of these dogs come with Kennel club registrations and none would be accepted back by the breeder.

The average price paid for these dogs was £800.00.

It is important that the buyer realise that having a kennel club registration is no guarantee of the health or temperament of a dog.

The Kennel Club is a business. It is NOT a welfare organisation. Breeders are NOT checked. NO BODY visits to see what conditions the dogs are kept in. ANYBODY can register a litter with the Kennel Club if they are prepared to pay to do so. The Kennel Club have no powers to prevent irresponsible breeding. Registration only means that you can show your dog in the show ring; it is NOT a guarantee as to the well being of a pup.

The recent case in the media of over 200 starving, dehydrated Yorkshire Terriers kept in a windowless shed in the most appalling conditions, only found when the 'breeder' died, is testament to this, as was a similar situation with a Labrador breeder last year.

Both Breeders were KC registered!

If you want to buy a puppy, there are certain things you should ask and see before you even consider parting with your cash.

Ask to see BOTH parents. If a dog was brought in for stud ask for the name of the stud dog and make contact with the owner. If the dog shows aggression to you, do NOT buy the pup.

  • Ask to see the full litter with its mum. Check that the bitch is looking healthy and is comfortable with you visiting her young and that the litter looks healthy.
  • You have the right to choose your puppy. Make sure the pup you choose is bright, sociable, interested in its surroundings and playful.
  • Do not take a pup that has mucky eyes, a snotty nose or is listless.
  • Ask about hereditary conditions such as Amyloidosis, Shar Pei fever, swollen hock syndrome and Demodectic mange. If necessary get the breeder to put in writing that, to the best of their knowledge that neither the Dam nor the Sire carries any of these conditions.
  • Ask if, in the event of a serious health or temperament problem, they will take the puppy back?
  • Ask if you can contact owners of puppies previously bred by the breeder, to attest to the temperaments and health of the dogs that have been bred.
  • Take your new puppy to your vet within the first few days and have it checked.

By following these simple steps, you will help to reduce the number of dogs that are given up to rescues

A good breeder will vet you thoroughly; you have the right to do the same.

==================================================

We are hearing more and more often of dogs being stolen. It is a cruel and heartbreaking trend.

To help protect your dog, get it microchipped and Neutered.

A neutered animal CAN NOT be stolen for puppy farming and helps protect your pet.

If you ALWAYS have a collar on your dogs with a tag stating that they are neutered, they are less likely to be stolen.

============================

Please do not ask us to return calls to a mobile.

We rely solely on donation and can not afford huge telephone bills.

THANK YOU

Please register for adoption or fostering.

You will find the forms to download on our 'please help' page.

Please Do it today

=======================================

Our Organisation asks for a ten pound registration fee before people go on the list to adopt a dog.

WHY?

Well, a lot of our dogs come to us with various health problems and many need operations. It would be unfair of us to knowingly allow someone to adopt a dog, aware that it should undergo surgery.

The registration fee means there is always some money available.

The other monies we rely upon is Donation, but sadly we have discovered that some people, once receiving a rescue dog from us, just don't want to cough up!

It is very strange that these same people, when asked why a donation isn't forthcoming, nearly always become abusive and nasty???

They don't care that without the donations, we would eventually be unable to rescue any more dogs.

It's a case of 'I've got my dog, who cares about the rest?'

WELL WE DO !

Please, when you apply to adopt you must not only take into consideration the yearly jabs, dog food, insurance etc; but also that you WILL be expected to give a reasonable donation. Most other 'rescue' organisations CHARGE you for an animal.

We Don't..So don't let us down...Please.

Please contact Roma if you can help. See our "Please Help" section for details and forms.

=========================================

How can you help?

Well there are several ways. You can help by letting us know when a dog is in need. You can help us transport animals. You can help us raise funds. You can help us by giving your time and expertise about the breed.

There are so many ways you can help and we too can help you. We will find good loving homes, We will take responsibility for veterinary care for fostered dogs, (where funds are available) We will make the phone calls, co-ordinate the rescue, find understanding foster homes for behavioural problems so they can be re-trained and we will make sure these wonderful sensitive dogs get homed with people who will love them for the rest of their lives.

We have no committees. No axes to grind. No politics. We just CARE. Please feel free to contact us with any enquiries. We look forward to hearing from anyone interested in helping us.
