Adopted Dogs

Sugar

Sugar is a sweet little girl who had to come into rescue because of a relationship breakdown. A friend of hers who works for the Dogs Trust contacted me and she has gone to live with a right motley crew of four legged friends. Hopefully she'll find her place in the pack and be a very happy little girl. She'll be very much loved and with fate on our side, she'll live a long and happy life.

XI

Gordon now XI went into Battersea and I admit I fell in love with his beautiful crossed eyes! He's a lovely boy who has now been castrated, treated for ringworm and microchipped. His new mummy recently lost a lovely pei called Winston. Her heart ached so much that I thought Gordon may just well be the character, who could heal her and bring light back into her life. He's a gorgeous boy and will have a wonderful life with his new mummy. Hopefully they can start again together.

Mia and Bear

Mia and Bear have finally found a wonderful home with people well used to doggie companions. In the past they've had various pairs of dogs and recognise that taking on two dogs at a time, really doesn't pose the problems people think it does. In many ways there are certainly less ‘settling' problems because they enter their new home with a companion. I really hope that the whole new family have lots of time together and that it is a match made in Heaven.

Rudy

Rudy was found abandoned in the snow over the Christmas period. She was very frightened and initially showed some aggression which made the RSPCA decide that if she went to them, they would destroy her. Gratefully I was contacted, and although we were on a really tight schedule, we managed to find a lovely couple to take her in knowing that she may have problems. As it happens they say she is a really gentle, loving soul and that despite originally offering to foster, she won't be going anywhere soon. They love her and want to keep her. Brilliant!

Coral

Coral is going to stay in Battersea, not as in never being adopted, but because she has been adopted by a member of staff!! Her coat is improving in leaps and bounds, however it will be a long term problem, so the ongoing veterinary treatment she'll receive, means she's safe. Her new daddy treats her like a Princess and she's getting an attitude to match! She deserves it, I just wish her previous owner had loved her that much.

Boris

Boris is a very bouncy, happy boy who is going to a new home of two couples, so he's going to be a very active boy with two sets of mums and dads. His new family are very committed to rescue and it's nice when a whole household gets together, to make sure a dog gets plenty of exercise and that there is always someone there for him during holiday periods etc I've no doubt that he will be given lots of cuddles, lets just hope he doesn't get four lots of treats!!

Koda

Koda has a lovely name and personality to match. She's another Battersea dog, but was not at all affected by kennels and remained exuberant and playful throughout her stay there. She has gone to live with a new family who had recently lost their dog and were ready to take on another rescue, albeit another breed. Their little girl was a wee bit nervous of my lot but Koda is the ideal dog to allay any fears. She's funny, bouncy, loves everyone and everything and is very affectionate. Lets hope she wants to love their chickens and NOT eat them? I feel sure she will settle well and be a much loved member of the family.

Maisie

Maisie is a lovely little girl who has gone into long stay foster care with a wonderful, caring family of two adults and two other shar pei. Having said that, ONE of the pei's IS having problems accepting her, but we'll get over that…we always do! She came to us because she has a very bad skin problem and her owner, who loved her dearly, had finally accepted that he just could not afford the extremely high vets bills. She came to this country through an Irish puppy farm and was sold by a very well known breeder in the showing circles. I can not stress enough…please read our piece on the front of the website about buying a puppy, if you intend to go this route. We are trying a more natural, holistic approach concerning diet and skin care and so far so good; but PLEASE make sure your vet sees your dog and approves ANY alternative treatment.

Kai

Kai was brought to our attention by crested rescue. Along with all their own rescues, they were kind enough to take him in and look after him. He was a long, long way away, however with their kindness and help, he was neutered, had his eyes done and transported halfway down, towards us so that we could re-home him with people who enjoy a ‘challenge'. The training he had been given by his temporary foster mummies was amazing and by the time we met him he was a great big dollop of wagging tail. He does have issues over food and poor little lad has obviously never been walked, but we are confident of the new home that have taken him and are happy that he is being given the opportunity of starting a new life of love and companionship.

Stella

Stella belonged to an American servicewoman who is being transferred abroad. Her owner had contacted another organisation who let her down and by the time she telephoned me we had less than 10 days to re-home her. Thankfully I had just the right people waiting and although it was very close to Christmas, they agreed to take her on. She's a lovely little girl, a baby at only 20 months and will easily become a well mannered, socialised shar pei . She has gone to live with another older dog of a different breed, who's nose is slightly out of joint at the moment, but her puppyish ways will soon win him over and hopefully they'll be friends for life.

Cherry

Cherry has left Battersea and gone into her new home as she can not have her surgery until January and we hated the thought of her staying in kennels over Christmas. She will return in the New year for her operations, but at present is firmly getting her paws under the table and enjoying the hustle and bustle of family life. She's a patient, loving shar pei , fairly undaunted by a boisterous two year old and her new mum and dad say she's lovely. No doubt she'll be getting turkey this Christmas. We wish all the dogs at Battersea and every other shelter across the country were getting the same. Hopefully there's a new home out there for all of you in the New Year? Please remember, don't buy a puppy, take on a rescue!

Kai

Kai (red/fawn) was picked up by the dog warden up North and thankfully she recognised his potential and just emailed me, in the hopes that I could help. He's had one eye surgically removed in the past which gives him a rather rakish expression and his new daddy says he has the temperament to match. So far he hasn't stopped wagging and with such a sunny disposition he'll do well going to work each day with his dad and meeting all the people that his daddy deals with. Fingers crossed for a very long and happy union..you deserve it boy!

Nellie

Chanel , now Nellie is a beautiful girl of nine who has been homed with our family who love older dogs. She is quite nervous and sensitive of her new surroundings but I know that with all the love and attention she'll receive, she will soon feel at home. She has another older lady to share her home with and is probably already experiencing the novelty of sharing a human bed with people and dogs with the nightly game of, ‘who gets the most duvet'! Hopefully she's coming to visit soon and I'll have the pleasure of seeing for myself how relaxed and happy she now is.

Noodles

Noodles at only 9 weeks old, must have been sent to heal the pain of loss. I can not believe how many babies we've had this year (5) but they've all thankfully gone to truly deserving, loving homes. This little one is a real cutie and she has definitely lifted the pall of grief that had descended on the home at the loss of Bhudda. She's a real pretty little Isabella, with a huge personality and I know she'll be a well mannered, well socialised little girl as she grows up. She's a gift from God. Thankyou.

Polo

Polo was kept in appalling conditions in a cage squashed between other dogs. He was used as a sire once, however luckily we got to hear about him and we were helped to intervene and he is now in a loving foster home. He had never been walked, had to defecate and urinate in his cage and was not handled at all. Thankfully he is only young and with the right TLC and training, he will soon become a valued and polite member of society. He is VERY small, possibly because his cage was so tiny, but hopefully now , with good diet, exercise and plenty of cuddles, he'll become the happy, healthy shar pei he was born to be.

Roxy

Roxy has now found a wonderfully loving forever home, with a little dog as a companion, two young children and a new mum and dad. She has settled really well; and as so often happens, all of her problems, ie Snapping, growling etc have completely disappeared. The shar pei is not only dominant, but very clever, however sometimes it takes moving an animal to make them realise that the type of behaviour they have been displaying, just isn't acceptable. It is so important that a dog understands the relationship between itself and its owner, but it isn't born with that knowledge, it has to be loved and trained to understand it. I never understand those who buy a puppy, do nothing with it and then can not understand why it isn't behaving the way they want it to? This wasn't necessarily the case with Roxy, but it's something I come across every day. It's not enough to just love a dog, you have to work with it, interact with it and show it its boundaries. Roxy now has a well structured family and doggie relationship; and will be loved for the rest of her days.

Bonzo & Sonny

Bonzo and Sonny . Wonderful news! We DID manage to re-home Bonzo and Sonny together and they are now settling well in their new home and thriving. Their new mum and children took to this pair of twins instantly and I'm not really surprised. These two had no problems at all. They are wonderfully healthy, sweet natured, funny and friendly. As with a lot of rescues, people are reluctant to take on two dogs at one time, but REALLY, two is no more difficult than one. In fact it is easier, as they keep each other company, will play together and do not suffer from separation anxiety when left! I really am happy for this lovely pair of dogs and their foster mummy wept buckets when they left.don't worry though.we have dogs lining up to be fostered by her!

Wrinkles

Wrinkles came to me as a real emergency, because his mum and dad were about to lose their home, with nowhere to take their dog. Sometimes things just seem right and in this case it was definitely a good match. Wrinkles had lived with a child with learning difficulties and I had a family with the same situation waiting for a dog. It's important that we find the 'right' dog in this situation and wrinkles was perfect. He's settled in very quickly and his new family are thrilled with him. Have a long and happy life Wrinkles.

Bella

Bella was a super, very easy little girl from Battersea who until recently was in a foster home. Her new dad was grieving terribly at the loss of his beloved pei Bertie and I knew that Bella was going to be just the little girl to mend his heart. When they met you could feel the emotion in the room and as the car drove away, it was wonderful to see both faces grinning widely at each other. Bella's new dad has written a book about Bertie who was a star of pavement and theatre, and we hope in the future to be able to advertise his book here on the website.

Bosley

Bosley is a super boy who also goes to a new home that has just lost their pei after a short battle with liver and kidney failure. He's a good looking chap and 'the master' of the house is excited at having another man about, instead 'of all these girls'!! I have no doubt that he's going to be thoroughly spoilt and loved as well as enjoying long , beautiful walks along the sea front of Hastings and St Leonards. Another happy ending with another pei homed to help heal the heartache of one losing ones best friend.

Jasmin

Jasmin is a really lovely little girl, who despite losing her ears and being crossed eyed, is one of the most lovely shar peis I've had the pleasure to meet. She reminds me so much of our Pucheen when she was her age, I just want to hug her! She's floppy, funny, eccentric and lucky to be alive ,as some breeders still kill flowered pups because they believe they 'damage' the show lines. She's a one in a million baby girl and will be totally adored by her mum.

Poppy

Poppy has a wonderful new home with one of our previous adopters and is helping heal the pain of losingMargo. They have similar temperaments and characters, so her new family have no problems with some of her less favourable tendencies! Her foster dad had already made headway and no doubt her new family will continue to train her to be a well mannered Pei . She's a super little girl and really great with the visiting grandchildren, being playful and patient.

Mace
Mace was another Battersea dog's home girl, with a lovely personality, good with other dogs, very affectionate with people and a joy to re-home. Another brindle, it is lovely to see these more unusual Shar Pei and it means that breeders are at last letting them live, instead of putting them to sleep because they don't come up to standard. She has gone to live with quite a large 'pack' of dogs and thoroughly enjoys all the rough and tumble of a busy household. Her mum and dad wouldn't part with her for the world.

Ellie

Kelly now Ellie, also came from Battersea. She's a lovely girl with a super temperament. She is good with everything with two or four legs. She was a stray and I can only think she was abandoned because she needed expensive eye treatment and spaying. Her new mum and dad think she's wonderful and although it's very early days they already feel she's become a huge part of their family and are very proud and happy to own her.

Noodles

Noodles is a lovely little girl who had to be re-homed because she hated her previous owners cats. She is a bit skittish and not good with other dogs, but her foster mum and dad decided after taking her in, that she was going to stay with them for good. She's very affectionate and playful and an excellent guard dog. I'm really happy she is staying and doesn't have the trauma of being moved again. Have a long and happy life little girl!

Chyna

Chyna is a super girl of seven years who has found the most wonderful new mum. When she first went to her new home her owner thought she would have to give up her running and just get used to walking, however all that has changed. Being loved and in a stable, loving environment has given this girl a new lease of life and she now runs everyday with her mum and is looking 5 years younger. I can't thank her mummy enough for being prepared to take on an older girlie, but her mum says she is a complete joy and she wouldn't be without her.

Millie

Millie is a very lucky girl indeed, because her very severe ear problems have meant that the surgeon ultimately decided to actually remove her ears. Despite her wonderful nature, we were worried that her looks may make homing her difficult, however, she is now settled in a wonderful home with Mr Mooshu and Mau (both previous rescues from our organisation). Her mum and dad say she is wonderful and now the scars are healing, looks like a little fur seal! She loves the company of other dogs and her owners think of her as 'special' rather than disabled. I know she'll have a wonderful life and be completely loved and looked after until it's time for her to cross the rainbow bridge.

Nico

Nico is at last settled into a new permanent home without young children and a big boy for a companion. They've had a few hic-ups with the seven cats but the saying that you can't teach an old dog new tricks, just isn't true!! Her mummy really loves her. She has changed her name to Cocoa which doesn't seem to have bothered her at all. A new name, for a new life. God bless you sweetheart, you truly deserved a settled and happy home.

Star

Star has at last found her forever home. She's a beautiful little dog and as predicted, in her new home she has not displayed any of the 'naughty snapping' that plagued her previous owners. She has spent the weeks holiday with her new mum and dad but will go back to her previous owners whilst they move. Moving is a traumatic experience, not just for you but also for your dog and can make an animal very insecure. It's wonderful when we can all work together so that the emotional well being of the dog is taken into consideration. Her new mum and dad can't wait to enjoy her full time and she will be just as loved in her new home as she was in her last.

Bailee

Bailee is going to stay with his foster mum and dad as his health problems are rather more than just epilepsy. More tests and vet bills are on the cards and to unsettle him again just wouldn't be fair. His mum and dad are very tolerant of both his fits and his separation anxiety, which we're working on. He's a lovely, daft, affectionate boy and we're hoping that the phenobarbitone will soon regulate his amount of fits and that his other health and emotional issues will eventually be sorted out. In the meantime, he's very much loved and no doubt being spoilt!

Jessie

Jessie , our pretty, chocolate bear coat, has gone to live with Pat (another foster mummy bites the dust!) but she is a lovely girl and they both deserve the best. With Jessie what you see is what you get. She's no push over, but is really quite laid back and loves people, although like all shar pei , she gets bored with all the attention and can ignore the adoration strangers want to show. I truly hope that Jessie and Pat have a long, long time together. They both deserve it .

Scooby

Scooby has at last found a wonderful home with a family who adore him. I have to thank Pat, his foster mummy, for all her time, patience and love, because without her, I do not believe he would have survived. His new family have young children and another shar pei (remember Scooby used to live with Buffy) and the other night he removed the duvet from his mum and dad's bed to wake them. Their little girl was crying and they hadn't yet heard her, so Scooby 'told' them she was in distress, which only shows that the faith we ultimately had in him, was warranted. So often the aggression a dog originally shows, when suddenly uprooted, is based in fear and confusion. Given time, the dust settles and the original personality of the dog reappears. Thank you all involved with Scooby, for loving him.

Molly

Molly came to us from a lovely lady who took on a shar pei who turned out to be pregnant. She had NO desire to be a breeder, so offered her to us on the understanding that whoever took her gave a 'sensible' donation to the rescue. She's a gorgeous little girl and like all puppies, she's growing up quickly, finding her paws and establishing her personality. She's already decided that she dislikes rain and tippy-toes around puddles, as well as being very sociable with strangers and other dogs. Hopefully she wi8ll have a very long, healthy and happy life.

Ruby

Ruby is a super girl who had some health problems and special needs. She was born with tiny ear canals which had caused her a great deal of pain through constant infections. Ultimately it was decided that she should have a total Ear Ablation, a very serious operation which invariably leaves the dog deaf, as it did in this case. Her mum was very worried about re-homing her, but is thrilled that she has gone to live in Jersey with a young couple and another shar pei as a companion. She has settled in extremely well and is thoroughly enjoying running on the beaches and playing with her 'new brother'.

Huckleberry

Huckleberry is an amazing first, which even I find hard to fathom. He was found wandering the streets at less than 3 months old!! He is a rarity in itself, as he is a flowered shar pei , which means 'more than one colour'. Very sadly some breeders put these puppies to sleep because they do not come into the 'standards' accepted by the Kennel Club. He was picked up by a dog warden, advertised and kept for seven days. Amazingly, NOBODY even enquired about him? Battersea Old Windsor then took the baby and thinking it had to be a mistake, also advertised him and again gave him the statutory seven days to be claimed. He wasn't, so has now been re-homed with a shar pei experienced couple who will give him all the love, guidance and support this baby needs as he grows into the lovely adult he is destined to become.

Tyson

Tyson is a very well trained, handsome boy who sadly had a glitch in his past and just couldn't accept his owner's son. He is a clever pup who likes his paws dried after a walk, his chin dried after a drink and gives you 'high five' for his dinner. His new mum has been grumbled at a bit, but as most of us know, this is not unusual with this breed, especially when they're unsettled and frightened. His new mummy understands his fears and is happy to give him time to get his paws under the table, feel safe and bond with her. She says he's very affectionate and she's proud to have been chosen as his new mum.

Bhudda

Bhudda and Nico sadly had to be split, as trying to find a home for them together was holding them both back. Bhudda has now gone to live with two, young, boisterous boys and is having a whale of a time. His new mummy and daddy adore him and can not believe how well he has adapted to his new life. He settled almost immediately, though is exhibiting some symptoms of separation anxiety. This is to be expected as he has never lived alone, but his new family are flattered that he wants to always be with them and don't seem to mind keep fitting new dog flaps? I have advised them how to train him out of this problem, for his own well-being, and it only takes four days, providing everything is done properly. Either way, he's in his new home for the rest of his life, for which both he and I are grateful.

(Nico should be going into her new home shortly)

Caramel

Caramel is now going to live with a lovely, shar pei experienced couple who sadly lost their shar pei 's some time ago. They are now ready for a 'new baby' and as she won't be living with any other dogs, she's probably going to end up VERY spoilt and very much loved. She's a really lovely little thing, despite her slight unpredictability with other dogs and I have no doubt that her new owners will be able to train her out of this. She's so young and so eager to please that I personally think this will be achieved fairly easily. She deserves a good loving home and thankfully we found her one. Good luck sweetheart.

Dutch

Dutch is a very handsome, slightly nervous lad who is going to live with Kaylee, who so kindly adopted Daisy, our three legged, ten year old a few years ago. Daisy's last years were made so very happy by Kaylee and her family and she is still very much missed today. We do say that these dogs get their wrinkles under your skin, and here is living proof. Dutch will be given all the love, understanding, patience and time he needs to settle and be a very much loved member of the family. I have no doubts what so ever that he will soon be bouncing around his new home with the same exuberance as in his picture. He's safe now.

Ronnie and Hailee

Ronnie and Hailee recently came into rescue. Ronnie had been homed by us a couple of years ago, but another organisation contacted me to tell me he was back up for adoption, with his companion Hailee. I would like to state publicly here.A DOG THAT COMES INTO SHAR PEI RESCUE AND WELFARE UK is FOREVER IN OUR CARE. NO adopter has the right to re-home one of OUR dogs without contacting me. I immediately fetched Ronnie and as both dogs were in poor condition and had a really strong bond asked that Hailee was signed over to us. Thankfully they are both now in a lovely foster home, are being walked regularly, are putting on weight, have been vet checked, given Stronghold and Hailee has been chipped to the rescue. We already have some interest regarding a permanent home. They are two of the easiest, loving, cuddly shar pei that I have ever met and I personally enjoyed fostering them for the 2 weeks I had them. Neglect is just as cruel as physical damage to a dog. Remember that please.

Noodles

Noodles had a very shaky start. His new owners picked him up, failed to put a collar and lead on him and then just opened the car door and allowed him to run away? They didn't bother to inform me, shelters, Police, Dog Warden or DOGLOST UK . As soon as we knew what had happened we swung into action, even emailing them a poster that we designed.however they failed to mention that they didn't own a printer?? We found him after he had been out for two nights in freezing temperatures with the Coventry dog warden they couldn't be contacted on any of their phones??? When I finally got hold of Niamh Hughes (husband Nicholas Hughes): of Newhall, Coventry , she hadn't been out looking for him OR working.she had a day off and 'had appointments'!!!! Needless to say, I am so sorry to Noodles for thinking this couple could care for him and he is now in a very loving home in Birmingham . PLEASE if you are aware of this couple wanting to 'adopt or buy' a dog, say NO! They're really not suitable pet owners and obviously have no sense of commitment to an animal. Her reaction was less than if she had lost a pair of shoes!!

Chyna

Chyna is a really lovely girl who has settled into her new home with such ease, even I am astounded. She came from kennels and obviously we weren't sure if she was housetrained or how she would react to being 'in doors' all the time. Well, we need not have worried.like most Shar pei she has very quickly got used to the idea of a warm bed and laying beside a fire and asked to go out after only being shown twice! They're such a bright breed. Her new mum and dad adore her and I feel confident that she's now in a safe, loving place until the day she dies.

Mau

Mau went to his new home where there are three other dogs already and slotted in as if he'd always been there. Mr Mooshu, one of our previous adopters, welcomed him with open paws and the two girls (an older Boarder Collie and a New Zealand Huntaway) just followed Mr Mooshu's lead. No pun intended! They are wonderful people with huge hearts and I was happy to re-home Mau with them, though I think they'll change his name, because I know he's going to be loved and looked after forever.

Alfred

Alfred was the most BEAUTIFUL boy I have met for a long time. His temperament was just WONDERFUL! Great with people and children of all ages, cats, other dogs and the world in general. He doesn't have a nasty bone in his body and I am really jealous of the family he's gone to (nicely of course!). Astoundingly he was turned down by a couple who I contacted about adopting him, because he only has one eye and 'didn't look like we expected'? So many dogs go into rescue because people go for looks instead of temperament.stupid I know, but there you are! The couple who have adopted him realise what a privilege and honour it is to own such a placid wonderful little boy and say that they wouldn't give him up for the world!...well if they do.I'm waiting ;- )

Chi

Chi is not a Shar Pei as you can see, but I've always had an affinity with the Chow-Chow as of course they were bred with Shar Pei 's in the past, hence the bear coat. This little lad just happened to come my way and I just knew of a really good couple who I believed would help. He arrives in his new home more or less as we speak and will have motley of other breeds as brothers and sisters, including a Shar Pei called Molly who we homed some time ago. I am confident that he will be loved and really looked after. The Chow-chow takes a LOT of grooming, but I'm in no doubt that as soon as he settles he'll become another 'much loved' member of the clan.

Ozzy

Ozzy came to us at 8 weeks.a real FIRST! It's a very special story because his mum rescued a very badly neglected female Shar Pei , only to find out she was pregnant. Unwilling to become a 'breeder' or make money out of this pup, his mum contacted us and asked us to home him on the promise that he would go to a 'shar pei' experienced home and that a substantial donation be made to the rescue. People like this are VERY, VERY rare and not only did they allow us to home Ozzy, but they also set up a small monthly donation to help us with our work. We can not thank them enough and their love and kindness is unrivalled. All I can say is a HUGE THANK YOU. He is settling well and is a joy to his new mum and dad, bless him.I wish there were more such kind hearts out there. A wonderful gift of life and love. Thank you.

Taz

TAZ is a lovely little lad with a sunny disposition and a great sense of humour. He has come from a kennel environment but is bright and intelligent and I'm sure he'll get the hang of living in a house soon enough..actually, when I spoke with his new mum and dad, he was happily settled on their living room couch, so I think he may have grasped the concept already!! He is being neutered this coming Friday, which may be a bit of a shock for him, but I doubt he'll be troubled by it for long. Have a wonderful new life Taz and be good for your new mum and dad.

Rio

Rio came from the same kennels as Taz but is altogether a different type of temperament. He's quite laid back but doesn't suffer fools gladly and in his new household, that is perfectly acceptable. He's not aggressive at all, but will stand his ground and grumble when necessary.so typical of this breed. His new mummy says he's the light of her life and often senses her mood and lets her know that he's there for her. She trusts him and though he had not lived his life in a home, he has had no problems in the 'house training' department and soon settled into a family routine. He was meant to be being fostered by this family...but I'm pretty sure he's not going anywhere!

Snoop & Zorro

Snoop and Zorro are a lovely pair of dogs but when they were re-homed Zorro settled really well but Snoop didn't. She pined dreadfully so it was decided she should go back with her mum.

This may sound like a failure, but in fact things couldn't have worked out better, cos mum realised that she could cope easily with the quieter, steady personality of Snoop, whilst Zorro really enjoyed the bustle and play of three little boys! Altogether another happy ending where everybody is happy and most importantly so are the dogs!

Ralph

Ralph was on our front page for some time and because of his issues he was not one of the easiest dogs to home. He was not a bad dog in any way, but he did have some problems. As so often happens I was looking far and wide for the right owner, when the answer was right under my nose!

For some time one of our previous adopters had been looking for a companion for her girl. I had forgotten what a little monster this shar pei had been and how her new owners love, patience and calmness had completely changed her personality. I spoke with her about Ralph and she was more than willing to see if she could work her magic again. Ralph is being fostered with a view to adoption. He has already calmed down considerably, so fingers crossed for him. One thing is for sure, whatever happens he'll be loved and very well looked after. Lets hope he stays!

Teddy

Teddy went into Battersea because I had a lady telephone me who was desperate and I had no foster home available. Normally I couldn't ask for help like this, but because of his circumstances the home agreed that as long as I moved him as soon as I could, they would shelter him for a couple of weeks. He is a very sensitive boy, who at times appeared to be showing aggression, but we understood what had happened to him and I am eternally grateful to Kerrie at Battersea dog's home for helping us out in a difficult situation. If you buy a puppy, PLEASE ask that the breeder would be prepared to take it back in the event of things going wrong, and get them to sign something that affirms their commitment. Time after time we see Breeders advertise that 'you shouldn't breed if you won't rescue'; however, nearly ALL of our dogs these days have papers and I have phoned breeders myself and been refused when it comes to helping their own puppies. It is my happy duty to tell you that this lovely boy is now homed in a family of three adults and is really settling in well. Good luck Teddy, you should NEVER have ended up in the situation you arrived at and I can only wish the best for you.

Kiya

Kiya is a super fit, energetic, young shar pei who is hopefully being re-homed as I write this. She will be living with quite a young child, but we have discussed this with her new mum and dad and they are prepared to work with both the dog and their children to make this work. When a young dog comes into the home, it is very important that the whole family understand that it takes time for a new animal to settle and that it must be guided, kindly but firmly where it's boundaries are and that the children also understand that the dog must have it's own space. Having spent a great deal of time chatting to these people, I am confident that everybody understands what they are going into and that Kiya will get the loving family she yearns for.

Gertie

Gertie is a lovely lady who's owners felt just couldn't get on with a new baby in the house. She's a little highly strung but a very loving, loyal girl. Gratefully, a lady was looking at our website and saw Gertie on the front page, and she was a dead ringer for a shar pei she had previously owned. As she has an aunty Gertie she felt that this was a sign and contacted me. Sign or not, she's now living in her new home and her mum and dad are as pleased as punch with her. Not so Mr Baggins their cat!! Still, Gertie is not showing any aggression, just a little too much interest, for his liking, but it's early days and I'm sure within a very short while they will be the best of friends.

Bhudda & Nico

Bhudda & Nico sadly had to be moved from the original home where they were placed due to unforeseen circumstances, and it was hard for everyone to move them on. Thankfully a couple in London very kindly stepped in and fostered them until I could find them the 'right' home, which gratefully I have! I have to say that they had never fostered before but were touched by the couples plight and did a really wonderful job. Funny how things work out, because this pair has also gone to live with a single dad and his children. The family as a whole are truly thrilled to have taken them on. The kids love all the rough and tumble of Bhudda and respect Nico's funny ways and say it just makes her more 'interesting'. It's so rewarding to be able to place two dogs who love each other together. I'm confident that they have found a home where they will now stay, and will be loved and looked after for the rest of their days.

Ghengis & Kublai Khan

Ghengis & Kublai Khan are two super boys with a strong bond and I was determined that they should be homed together. I say this so often.two is better than one, for so many reasons. The family who has taken them on are absolutely thrilled with these new additions to their family and the boys have really settled well. Their new dad is a single father and he made the most wonderful comment to me a couple of days after they were homed. He said, 'It's great. It's like having toddlers in the house again!' what a super analogy! It was very painful for their previous mum and dad to give them up, but like me, they are comforted by the fact that we have no doubt that they will be very much loved and get all of the attention they deserve.

Gem

Gem was a cross Shar Pei who had reared her own puppies and then fostered another litter of pups from a dog who couldn't look after them. She was at risk because the Shar Pei genes meant she did not like other dogs, however she was fabulous with people and after her gift of life to the puppies she helped feed, I felt she deserved a chance. Thankfully a lovely, sensible lady appeared who had no problems with Gem's dislike of other animals and simply decided to train her to the muzzle. My own boy's are run off lead muzzled. It is a practical solution to dogs that dislike other animals. It does not harm your dog and prevents your dog harming other people's dogs. I wish Gem and her new mummy all the best for the future and hope to hear from them on a regular basis. Gem has been lucky, but her new mummy says that she is the lucky one!

Misty

Misty came to us at just five months and I knew we would have no problems homing this sweet puppy. She's typical of her breed, very affectionate, very funny and her new mum and dad are just delighted with her. There just aren't enough words to cover all the lovely things they say about her. It is unusual to have a pup in rescue and ultimately rather sad, but better that she comes to us now than when she is older and life could have mistreated her. Her new mum and dad are enjoying her 'puppyhood'. It doesn't last long and soon they'll have a 'big' dog running around the house, still making them laugh, I hope.

I would just like to add that Misty's original owner gave her up because of fights with her other dog. She loved Misty very much, in fact, enough to let her go.

Molly

Molly was finally homed and has moved to Scotland to live with two gentlemen and their other dogs. Her owner had asked me previously three times to home her, but every time I found her a home, she couldn't let go. Despite all the work involved, I felt Molly had to be moved as her mummy was ill and projecting her own fears and worries onto Molly, which was preventing Molly from leading a normal 'doggie' life. She suffered from extreme nervousness and separation anxiety, but her new family say that as time passes she blossoms and that her separation anxiety is being controlled. Have a new and happy life Molly and enjoy yourself with your new pals.

Rio

Rio came to us having been kept out of doors in a shed. Like most 'Blues' we've come across, her coat was awful, not helped at all by living out of doors. She needed spaying, an entropian operation and several other bits and bobs doing, which has made her an expensive rescue, as those giving up dogs, rarely donate. She does have a skin condition but this is controlled by diet and a little extra TLC with Neem oil and occasionally a Neem shampoo bath. She's a very affectionate little girl and is presently living with Winston, one of our rescues from a long time ago. She loves cuddles and has a habit of climbing onto your lap and placing her squigy nose against yours. She's adorable and I'm proud that we have been able to give her a better life.

Carmella

Carmella is a wonderful, laid back girl who has brought great pleasure and love to her new family. She's lost a little weight since her photo, so I'm told, and has three long walks a day as well as plenty of games when they're offered. She's just great with everyone and a super advert for the breed because her new family say they can not think of anything detrimental to say about her. Have a lovely long life girlie and enjoy every moment of it.

Twix

Twix is a happy little boy who can be a bit nervous and can give the wrong impression. He can be a bit 'barky' but is more likely to hide behind you whilst making all that noise, than attack you. Kerrie did a super job at Battersea, socialising him by taking him into the office with her, allowing him to mix with other dogs and generally giving him the time and attention he needed. Now he's gone to his new home and his mum thinks he's wonderful. He deserved another chance and thankfully with time and effort has been given one.

Hippo

Hippo was rescued by us from a shelter in Wales . They had cared for him well, but sadly chose the wrong home for him (as we've all done) and he went back to the shelter and was very depressed. Thankfully the couple who had, had Peaches decided they wanted to try again and took him in. This is not a household of complete harmony, as their dog is still trying to throw her weight around , however with our help and their determination, we all are sure we can make this work. Their dog had lived with a male before and I'm sure she will do so happily again. She has just had a period of not having to share and needs to be reminded of the benefits of companionship. We'll let you know..

Ronnie

Ronnie also came to us from Battersea. In fact he went in there while I was there assessing another Shar Pei who we have since re-homed. He's a big boy who had obviously suffered some neglect, but his heart is as big as the rest of him and even on the day he went in, despite being totally confused, managed a lick for me. The lady he went to live with had also just lost a Shar Pei and the dogs companion was so depressed and miserable, it would not eat .Ronnie has filled that void for Halley and I think the photograph says it all!

Smudge

Smudge is a super boy also from Battersea. When he went in there was some talk of him being aggressive, but when he was assessed, we thought I had more aggression in me than he does! He's bouncy and playful and has helped heal the hearts of a couple who adopted an older dog from us and recently lost him to Liver and Kidney failure. He loves his new companion (a boarder collie) and is a bit of a daddy's boy, even following him to the toilet! To those of us in the know about Shar Pei , this isn't unusual. I hope he has a long and healthy life and know that he will always be very much loved.

Peaches

Peaches is now Peppi. She has had her surgery but despite trying everything, the couple who took her on had real problems with their existing dog. She refused to accept her and as Peaches was so young it just didn't seem fair. Now Peaches/Peppi is happily re-homed with a gentleman and his wife who are thrilled to bits with having her and thoroughly enjoying the challenge of training her. She's settled really well and her new mum and dad say they wouldn't part with her for anything. She has found her 'forever' home and we wish her a long and happy life.

Honey

Honey is another Battersea dog & Cats home dog, who was in need of our help. We are the ONLY organisation who deal with Battersea dogs home Shar Pei's and home ALL of the Shar Pei's who go in there. We have a good working relationship with the home and often visit to assess dogs that go in. Neill met Honey and thought she was a super little girl. Very bouncy, full of confidence and a happy personality although she was not good with other dogs who she did not know. She is now re-homed and very happy with her new mummy. Let's hope she has a long and happy life.

Baby

Baby is another Battersea dogs home dog who is a sweet natured, lively little girl who has difficulty staying still. When Neill went to meet her she bounded and bounced all over him and Kerrie to the point where it was hard to take a photograph. She is very playful and probably about 2/3 years old. As soon as she is spayed she is going to live with a super couple who understand that rescue dogs need time and patience to settle in to a new routine. She is going to have a rescue male as a companion as well as lots of other animals, which will be difficult for her at first but in time will be her 'family'.

Tia

Tia is a lovely girl who is slightly older which made us worry about homing her, however older animals have so much to offer and thankfully she was seen on the website by a lovely family. They have a 'teenage' mastiff and thought that taking on an older girl might help him to learn some manners. So far so good. It is a fact that often an older dog helps to teach a younger animal how to behave, in as much as dogs are pack animals and there is often a respect for age in the doggie world. She has taken up the challenge with enthusiasm and we wish her all the best.

Rita

Rita has settled so well in her new home that her mummy and daddy can not believe she ever lived anywhere else! They say she has a wonderfully gentle persona, loves being allowed to greet people in the pub/restaurant and has already found her spot on their bed! Now, they have decided to get her a companion to live with, so as soon as the right dog comes up, Rita will have to accept that there's going to be another shar pei in the household..she had better move over on that bed!

Frank

Frank we had to put on the website as urgent because after Xmas there are so many dogs going into shelters that he was at real risk. Because the shar pei was bred as a guard dog and were initially introduced to this country as a 'fighting' dog, they rarely pass the 'stranger' test in shelters. This means that despite us desperately trying to educate shelters, they are often put to sleep, regardless of their temperament. We are so grateful to Alex and his family for seeing our plea and getting in touch with us to home this lovely, gentle creature that desperately needed another chance. We do not re-home puppies, because people who can afford a puppy are unlikely to put them up for adoption.

We home dogs that really need a loving, caring and patient home. If that is you, get in touch with us. Like Alex and his family, you will not regret it!

Roma

Roma , Yes, her foster parents decided to name her after me! I'll be honest and say how flattered I am! Anyway, we heard about this little girl in a shelter. Like so many unspayed bitches, she had been bred so young and so often that who ever owned her just kicked her out when she stopped producing either the amount of puppies expected or just didn't have puppies to make her worth breeding from? I was lucky enough to be contacted by people who wanted to adopt in her area, and they went and got her, even though they knew she wasn't for them. They gave her a new opportunity, knowing she would be homed by someone else. They have enjoyed the experience so much, that they have offered to foster again. We can not thank them enough, because without people like them, she would have been put to sleep. Thankfully, she has now gone to her forever home, with people who have enough love to understand where she is coming from. We always need good adopters and good foster mums and dads, PLEASE, if you have the patience and love to help a dog abandoned or harmed, get in contact with us. Thankfully, I now know Roma will be loved until the end of her days.

Jenna

Jenna now Keira, was in the process of being found a home by us when she escaped and ended up with the local dog warden. Thankfully a real good Samaritan offered to go get her for me and fostered her until the right home could be found. Despite having no training, her foster mummy was thrilled that she learned so quickly and as she was so loving, it was quite a wrench when her new dad picked her up to take her to her new home. Fostering IS hard, as these little critters have a way of wagging their way into your heart, but it is such a wonderfully unselfish thing to do and means that dogs aren't left in kennels, where they tend to do badly.

We can not thank those who foster enough and Jenna now has a new daddy to love her and give her all the time, training and care she needs.

Louis

Louis lived in a home with several other dogs but his mummy became ill and his life was turned upside down. He wasn't being walked or looked after properly, so his mum contacted me and asked if I could find him a quiet home where he would be well looked after and loved. I knew the perfect couple and since he went to live with them, they have nothing but praise for him. They tell me he is a wonderfully affectionate boy who has settled with their two other dogs as if he grew up with them. I think they said he was, 'perfect' and that makes me feel good about my choices and happy in the knowledge that he will be loved until the end of his days.

Bonnie

Bonnie Is a lovely girl who is also moving just after Christmas. Her new mum and dad are really looking forward to settling her into her new home but decided that Christmas, with all the visiting, fuss and commotion probably wasn't fair on her, so as soon as it's all settled down, they'll go get her. Her existing family are also pleased to have her with them over the festive holidays. She will be sadly missed but as their circumstances have changed they feel it is only fair to allow her a new start in a new family who can give her what she needs. Best of luck Bonnie.

Luther

Luther came to us through another rescue. A big handsome boy, he was the first shar pei they had ever dealt with and within a very short time he had won the hearts of all those who looked after him. He needed neutering and entropian surgery which thankfully the rescue were more than happy to provide, so he went to his new home fit and healthy and ready to show everyone what a wonderful shar pei he really is. He has gone to live with Sue and her family. He can, of course, never take Jakes place, but he's such a large character, hopefully he'll help heal the loss and quickly wriggle himself into their hearts the way his forbearer did.

Chunk

Chunk is a really lovely boy who completely lives up to his name. He's 'chunky' to say the least, but in that big body lies a heart of Gold. He has moved in with Billy's family and hopefully will help them over the death of their little boy, who sadly, they had for such a short time. Chunk, thankfully has now firmly placed his big paws under the table, so to speak. He is much loved and well looked after and will hopefully be with his new mum and dad for many years to come.

Charlie Brown

Charlie Brown Is a super little boy with a wonderful character, who's dad sadly ended up with no ability to look after him. He has been well loved and looked after, in fact he was loved enough to be let go, which is very hard for the previous owner, but a real bonus for the young couple who have taken him on. He's funny, affectionate, super with children and other animals, loves grown ups too..in fact, we're waiting to find out his vices!!

Ruby

Ruby was found tied to a tree and deserted in a park. Her new mummy found her and originally contacted us with the intention of having her rehomed. What is wonderful about these dogs is that once you give them the love & care that they deserve, they pay you back ten fold. In the time that her new mummy has taken her on, she has realised what a wonderful dog Ruby is, and has decided to keep her. We will offer all the support that she needs in order to give Ruby the best life possible. These dogs have a way of worming their way into your heart. Thank you Denise.

Ebony

Ebony was taken to our local vet and was left to be destroyed for snapping at a child. Thankfully a nurse telephoned me and I immediately took her in and organised to get her spayed, her ears cleaned, teeth checked and blood tests done. She was a little grouchy when she first met strangers, but all I had to do was hold her nose and she would look up at me and wag her tail??!! Fit and healthy, she has gone to live up country with a single lady who can give her one to one love and attention until the end of her natura l days. Her new mummy says she's a complete sweetie and a wonderful companion. Lets hope they have a long time together.

Bella

Bella is another young lady who has gone to a new home and I know that her problems will be helped and sorted out with love and patience. Her new mum and dad recently lost Kiki who is on our remembrance page, so they have so much to give this young pup. She can never replace Kiki, but will be loved as an individual and can help heal the pain of loss for both her mum and dad and Sacha who are left behind. She's a super little girl and I'm confident that within a very short period of time, she'll be fully integrated and very happy in her new home.

Dance

Dance is a little whirlwind and she's driving her new mum and dad and her companion Gus round the bend..in a nice way though. She likes to live at 100mph, but she's very young and no doubt the shar pei laziness will kick in soon. Her dad is a big bloke who we watched turn to jelly when he first met her; and I think it's fair to say, she's a bit of a daddy's girl now. She's a wonderful girl and has gone to a wonderful home where her mum and dad have the patience and love to help her grow up into a beautiful shar pei. Thank you both

Sacha

Sacha came to us for rehoming, however after a lot of careful thought she is going to stay with her family. I have placed her on the website as an example of dogs who come to our attention and with help and understanding, end up NOT being moved. Shar pei are a really sensitive breed and where possible should remain where they are happy and loved. It always makes us happy if we can help resolve problems in a family and the dog no longer needs our help. That's truly a happy ending.

Rebel

Rebel is one of the sweetest Shar Pei 's I have ever come across. He's a tiny boy with a huge heart and Neill called him an 'angel', which is praise indeed. His owner found giving him up one of the hardest things he had ever had to do and by no means handed him over to us lightly. He is in a very loving foster home with a view to adoption, but I think it highly unlikely that he will be moving again because his mummy and daddy think he is just adorable. He has settled in really well and now shares his home with a large cat as a companion. He's very special and despite having a skin problem will hopefully never be moved again.

Shannon

Shannon has settled into her new family really well and her new mum took time off work to help her get over her separation anxiety, which had been a real problem. By sticking to a tried and tested method ALL dogs can get over this worrying condition, but it takes patience and dedication on the part of the owner to get through it. She's now living with a dalmation and cats for company and has already found her place on the bed at night. On a personal level this really gladdens my heart because I believe pets are part of the family, and you wouldn't shut a child in the kitchen at night, would you?

Charley

Charley is now known as Charlotte and her new mummy has seen her 'come out of herself' and improve in confidence almost minute by minute. She says she is the most loving dog she has ever owned and is proud to have her in her family. Looks like Charlotte has landed on her paws! She's a sweetheart who is good with everything and everybody and at six is the perfect pet.Practically everyone who contacts us ask for a dog as young as possible but we often advise that it is more practical to take a more mature shar pei, especially if they have never owned the breed before and already have a young family. Older dogs have 'mellowed', just like we do.

This doesn't mean they don't enjoy a game or that the new owner will only have the dog for a short period, so think hard when you fill in your adoption form. Shar pei's are wonderful at any age and I personally just feel grateful to be around them, no matter how old they are!

Roly

Roly has also sadly been re-homed twice. Once by Battersea and then by us! He's a super boy, so typical of the breed in as much as he only hears you when he wants to! His new owner has Roly with him constantly and says he's wonderful. He had his first shar pei for 14 years and couldn't bear the emptiness of being without him. Roly is his new companion and with another shar pei in the family and a doug de bordeux he won't be lonely. Hopefully Roly will be around as long as his last dog was and they'll have many happy years together.

Harvey

Harvey has sadly already been rescued once, so when his most recent home collapsed he was brought to our attention. He is the most beautiful Blue and though he's taking a while to settle down in his new home, he obviously likes his new diet because his coat has become really beautiful. His new mum and dad are staying in close contact and say that there has already been a vast improvement. It is not unusual to come across some problems when a dog is newly adopted and I am always grateful and surprised when people don't expect an 'instant fix' and are prepared to work through the difficult early days. We will be arranging surgery for Harvey as his entropian was ignored, and sadly has left some permanent damage. He's a lovely boy and I was honoured to get so many kisses. I'm always amazed that these dogs understand when they are loved and admired and despite the cruelty they have endured, are still willing to give love in the hope that it will be returned. This time it will.

It is with great sadness that Harvey was put to sleep. He had more problems than we had realised, possibly a brain tumour; but he is now at peace and no longer in any pain.

Gus

Gus was brought to our attention by a shelter in Storrington. He was quite grumpy and the shelter were at a bit of a loss, so Neill went to see him and see if he could help. He's a big boy, very handsome and within minutes Neill had his face washed by a very grateful shar pei . His new home has a Bengall cat who was horrified at the arrival of a dog, but his new mum and dad are determined to get through it and training of both animals has started in earnest. We're staying in touch and keeping our fingers crossed for him, because everybody wants this to work.

Billy

Billy was a stray brought in to Battersea. If his old owners had tried to claim him, it would have been a cruelty case because when he arrived there you could see every bone in his body. To make his life less stressful we removed him from the kennels and placed him in a loving foster home with Lilly's mum. Now he's doing really well and gradually putting on weight. He's a typical young, male shar pei who is going to go and live with another little shar pei girl, who no doubt will get just as cross with him sometimes, as Lilly did! Lets keep our fingers crossed and hope he will now be loved and well fed forever.

It is with great sadness that Billy passed away in his new mummy's arms. He was only two years old and died from organ failure resulting from bad breeding. Breeders know if their dogs carry the genes for a condition known as Amyloidosis , and know that dogs bred with this condition often die between the years of two and five. My heart breaks for both Billy and his family. Rest in piece little one. I'll think of you often

Margo

Margo had to be homed really quickly for various reasons so we decided to send her to a 'new' foster mummy and daddy. Well despite how hard we try to cover everything, things just didn't work out. The couple who took her were experienced Shar Pei people, with two of their own but for some reason one of their dogs took an instant dislike to her and viciously attacked her! Thankfully we already had another card up our sleeve and her new foster mummy has fallen in love with her and now intends to adopt. Margo has the most wonderful temperament and at precisely 9pm every night goes and collects one of Theresa's cats and takes it to bed with her!! It gets a thorough wash and then they settle down to sleep. During the day she plays a bouncing game with the same cat until they both get tired. I'm hoping to persuade Theresa to video it for the website. Despite a rocky start, Margo is now very much at home and very, very loved.

Nero

Nero is a beautiful boy with an interesting history. A couple of years ago he managed to get off a lead in the Welsh mountains. He was missing for over three weeks and his mum thought he was gone forever. Someone was watching over him, because some hill walkers heard his pitiful cries and he was found stuck down a pot hole. Skinny and stressed he survived by drinking rain water. His mum has broken her heart giving him up, but knows it is kinder due to her change in circumstances. The family who have adopted him brought their young teenager from Russia and she was not allowed to bring her dog. The two are now inseparable, helping to heal each others pasts and we wish them both a long and happy life.

Lollipop

Lollipop is a very, very rare case, in as much as she came to our attention at only four months old. She's a little Bear coat, full of fun and mischief and her new daddy says she is just perfect and very good. He is taking her to work with him, so she is being well socialised and when she is out in the garden, one of my brood jumps the fence and goes to play with her! She's had her eyes tacked and is now chipped. She will be neutered as soon as our vet approves as well as having her double dew claws removed. She's gorgeous and hopefully will have a long and happy life.

Ralph

Ralph at last seems to have found a forever home. When Marvee was adopted Claire's mum took to him straight away and over time, decided that perhaps she would like her own shar pei. She saw Ralph on the website, read his plight and was hooked. Ralph gets on with Marvee and they are great pals. He also loves all the grandchildren and has settled in remarkably quickly considering how often he has been moved around. He deserves to be loved, bless him!

Stan

Stan was nicknamed, 'Stan the van man' because he had an absolute fixation with vans. Loved em! Well, he's been adopted by a man with a van and will be travelling on a regular basis with his new daddy, as he goes about his work. Now there's a happy ending ! We would like to thank Jackie at Rain Rescue for all the love and care she gave this little boy whilst he was in her care.

Trix

Trix was a real challenge for us as he had become ridiculously over protective of his owner. He was bought as a pup when his owner was ill and grew up thinking he was the boss and that nobody should go near his owner regardless of the reason. When I met him he nearly took my head off but within 30 minutes Neill had gained some control over him. This meant that we really felt that Trix could be re-trained providing the right person came along. Thankfully they have and we will be working with them to help Trix have a happier, less stressful life. We wish him all the best in his new home and will be interested to see how he progresses.

Shang

Tony now Shang was gifted to Battersea dogs home with a Labrador because his family were moving back to Spain . He was very distressed in kennels, however Kerrie worked hard with him and thankfully he has gone to live with a young English Bull Terrier who fell in love at first sight. There are cats in the home which he will have to be trained to ignore; but we are sure his new owners will have no problems with this.

After Tony was homed from Battersea we visited him in his new home and found a happy, healthy boy, completely adored by his bull terrier companion. Unbeknown to us his new owners contacted Battersea directly with various problems, disregarding the fact that the dog belonged to us. One of these problems was his aggression to other dogs outside the home. Both ourselves when we visited and then Battersea's behavioural unit advised that he be trained to the muzzle; and when in public, to protect other dogs, he be muzzled and kept on a lead. Sadly this advice was not heeded and he managed to slip his lead and attack another dog, resulting in him being put down. His adopted parents have still not had the decency to contact us regarding his death, or why he was not returned to us. Their ignorance has been the cause of this dogs death. I can not print my feelings in this case, however if ONLY I had been informed I believe he would now still be alive and living with people able to cope with his problem. Enough said.

Mushi

Mushi has now moved from foster care into his new permanent home. He's had an unsettling start, being moved from home to home so we are really pleased that his new mummy and daddy say he's NOT going anywhere without them in the future . He's a very amiable soul so hopefully he will settle quickly and enjoy the fun of living with another dog for company. His foster mum and dad were very sad to see him go, but obviously want the best for him and the care they gave him in the interim was just what he needed.

Millie

Millie has a very bad skin condition and has been on the front of the website for some time. After a courtesy call to some previous foster parents, they phoned me about her and literally picked her up the following day. She has settled in remarkably well and enjoys being gently rubbed with oil which her new owners actually find therapeutic too. This little girl really deserved a second chance and I could not wish for better adoptive parents for her. Apparently she has already started growing new hair! Bless!

Phiilou

Phiilou was originally homed with a family who said he was aggressive. He is a perfect example of peoples ignorance on how to introduce a dog into it's new environment. He was taken from his mum, paraded around the neighbourhood by the kids as soon as they got him and a hoard of people came to the house to see him. Lots of loud noises, children screaming and being dragged about. He was very upset and as the front door was opened he made a dash for it. He was stopped by a foot in his face and ultimately growled and showed his teeth. so I was called. He is now safe and his new family have allowed him the time to settle so that he has shown them nothing but love. If you want to adopt, PLEASE do read the piece I send out on 'How to make your Shar Pei at Home'. It's VERY important for the dog and can make the difference between a happy homecoming and a traumatic one.

Lilly

Lilly went into Battersea with another female Shar Pei whowas taken back by her owners because she had so many health problems; she risked being put to sleep. By gifting Lilly it meant they could spend more time etc on their other Pei . Lilly is a lovely girl who has had to have some surgery but is now heading for her new home. She's an affectionate girl who loves jumping all over you to show how happy she is. We wish her all the best in her new environment and hope she will be loved forever in her new family.

Jade

Jade was brought to my attention by a neighbour of her owners, who could not take her on but was determined not to allow her to be put to sleep. She is ten years old and has a 'dodgy' back end which she was born with. We placed her in foster care with a gaggle of Chihuahua 's and she just thrived. Her foster mummy could not sing her praises enough and she is now re-homed with her foster mummy's mum. She's a total sweetie and all the more loveable for her wobbly rear, which she waggles until she's wagged herself off her feet!

Bob

Bob is a real character who sadly ended up in Battersea dogs home. He's a real live wire with a lovely disposition and bundles of energy. Most of the staff there just fell in love with him, as did his new mum the minute she set eyes on him. She immediately contacted me to tell me about his new bed, coat, dishes etc and says he's much more handsome in real life than in his photograph . Let's hope Bob will have a long and happy life with all the love he deserves.

Zachi

Zachi is a fabulous puppy of only 22 months who behaves as if he's 12 weeks! His ex owner purchased him for all the wrong reasons, but was honest enough to admit this and signed him over to Shar Pei Rescue to find him the home he deserves. He has never been lead trained and has never had a walk, his last family felt they were just too busy. His new family were warned that they were going to have to start from scratch, but thankfully embraced the idea. Zachi has only just moved so we will update this piece, when we know how well he's coming on.

Rocco

Rocco is a lovely boy who gave us a terrible scare recently.. He has had problems since he was a pup and has to have daily medication, but recently his foster dad and I thought we were going to lose him. Neither myself or the vets could tell us what was wrong with him and the symptoms made us think we may have another case of MRSA. Thankfully, although he was very, very ill, he's a fighter and is now hopefully out of the woods. I can't thank his foster dad enough for all the hands on TLC he has given him and the fact that his foster family have decided to adopt him is the best news we could all hope for.

Harley

Harley is a wonderful boy who I have personal experience with. He has a super nature, is good with people, children of all ages, babies and other dogs but did suffer from separation anxiety. His new mummy will be working with him to help him over this emotional hiccup, because a dog that suffers from this really isn't 100% happy in himself. Hopefully when his training is completed, he'll be the sure and confident little dog he should be.

Sidney

Sidney was gifted to Battersea and underwent two lots of surgery to his eyes. He's an unusual little lad because he's a brindle. Thankfully he must have been born to a 'back street breeder', because many of the show type fraternity would have put him to sleep for not being a pure colour. He has the most wonderful nature and his new owner is head over heels in love with him! Let's wish them both a long and happy life together.

Dillon

Dillon is an older gentleman who recently lost his companion of eight years. His friend's death left him grieving terribly and with his owners change of lifestyle meant he started being afraid to sleep alone and crying in the night. After a lot of thought it was decided that it would be kinder to allow him to live with another dog in a new family so we sent him to live with a new mummy and daddy with a dog of a similar age. It's hard for a dog of this age to just start again, but with a lot of love and kindness, he should settle soon.

Sasha

Sasha is a lovely little girl who's dad sadly decided to give her up because he has been posted to Iraq (we're thinking of him). She was very nervous about being touched on her head and had snapped in the past. Her new owners recognised the problem, booked her straight into the vets and she underwent a double Entropion operation which has completely changed her personality. She loves her new home and all her doggie playmates and hopefully will be around for a long time to come.

Lucy

Lucy  is a lovely girl who had lived with another dog before she moved to her new home. She impressed her new owners to such an extent that they decided to adopt another dog from me. Her owners took on Benson and like all ladies, the fact that he totally ignored her for the first couple of weeks, only increased her interest. She completely adores Benson despite him being very macho with her. Why is it that so many girls love a bad boy?  Dodie says that she will follow him around like a love sick pup and of course, secretly he loves all the attention.

Kia

Kia is a little five month old Shar Pei who was abandoned in a shelter. She was so young and vulnerable we had to think long and hard where we placed her, because like all bitches, we can not get her spayed until after her first season and we have no wish to allow her to be exploited in any way. Thankfully, Christine who adopted Winston has taken her in (both Flame and Winston are neutered) and she has really settled well. She's a beautiful little scrap who came to us without even a name. We wish her all the love and life she should have been born into.

Marley

Marley has benefited to such a degree from the love, time and effort that his foster mums have put in, that he is being adopted by the couple who adopted Holly. They have spent two weekends together (chaperoned of course) and Marley definitely has a new spring in his step! Holly has recently been spayed and had a hernia repaired at the same time, but she will be fit and well by the time Marley moves in on the 24th June. We can't thank Amanda and her partner enough for all the hard work they've put in with Marley, without them, he wouldn't be here.

Marley is now settled in his new home and is a very, very happy boy

Reno

Reno  is now settled in a big bustling family. He's had the snip, is putting on weight and really seems to have found an environment that suits him. He's a really happy, affectionate boy and with all those children and other dogs around him he has blossomed into a confident and contented little dog. He's even grown a couple of inches in height!

We are really sad to tell you that Reno was found dead recently. He died of a heart attack but it was a terrible shock to his new mum and dad and of course, us. He was so young to be taken so suddenly. We can only be grateful that he didn't suffer. Rest in peace little one.

Jack & Angel

Jack and Angel have joined Reno, Boycie and the throng here in Eastbourne. They've settled remarkably well and though Angel is still very nervous around adults, she really loves all the cuddles and games from the children in Kirstie and Terry's household. Jack is the older gentleman in the house and has a wonderful, calming influence on the younger boys. Thankfully there have been no problems and everyone seems to accept their positions in the pack. The whole family will be moving soon to a bigger house and a much larger garden, which will benefit everyone, though the dogs don't seem to care!

Elle

Elle Came to us because she has a terrible fear of loud noises and the recent thunderstorms made her owner, who has to be out a lot, come to the painful decision of re-homing her with someone who is always there for her. She has settled in well in her new home and her new mum and dad say it's as if she was always a part of their family. She lives with a young  Jack Russell who keeps her occupied with chasing, play fighting and keeping the garden free of cats! Elle is a lovely girl and we're really pleased she has blended in so well.

Amber

amberRescued from Battersea. A beautiful fawn brush coat. Lovely manners. Found wandering by police. Roughly three and supposedly not good with oto live with Jane, her other dogs. Amber went two children and a rough collie. She settled in very quickly and has established herself and her personality to such an extent that her family can't imagine life without her.

Jessie

This tiny little Pei with a big personality was gifted to us as her family could no longer look after her. She is a fawn horse coat who loves children and people. She's a feisty little girl and has gone to live with Lin, her two teenage daughters and a big Shar Pei boy, known as Khan. When she arrived she came with a bladder problem, but this didn't put Lin off and everything is fine now. A little gem, but Lin says she's actually a Jack Russell in 'fancy dress'!

Max

Taken to Battersea by the police as his owner had been deported. I fell in love with this leggy, pale fawn boy who liked to 'talk' and mouthed everyone he met. A beautiful temperament. Good with dogs and people. Max is nearly 2 years old and was collected and re-homed by Samantha. Sam has had a Shar Pei before and wanted a companion for her German Shepherd bitch. She is very experienced around dogs but Max will be a breeze and one of the fonest companions.that is if I don't steal him from her!!..I know he'll be very happy and well loved until the end of his days.

BeeLin

This slightly nervous, sensitive girl was desperately loved and it was very hard for her mum to give her up. Unforunately Bee lived with other dogs, one of whom had a thyroid problem and epilepsy, which upset Bee to the point where she would attack the other dog when it fitted. She is a small., leggie black brushcoat/horsecoat. She had lived with cats, horses, donkeys and was used to plenty of space to run in. Bee was re-homed by Nicola who is a National park warden and wanted a companion for her rounds. Bee is so happy and is the sole pet (apart from Nicola’s horse) so she now has the one to one relationship she craved.

Bo

This little lad was found in Newcastle dogs home and despite Mick having five dogs of his own, he opened his heart and took Bo straight away. He was thin, very frightened, isolated and extremely wary. After a few days of TLC from Mick and Denise, Bo was adopted by Steve. Steve is devoted to helping Bo come out of himself and giving him back his confidence; and already he is showing good signs of being a happy, well adjusted Shar Pei who has found the love and devotion he deserves.

Missie

turned up at Battersea dogs home rather bewildered. She was a bit nervous and was spooked easily. She’s a very pretty Red brushcoat who had lived with young children prior to re-homing. She now lives with Beverley and another rescue dog; and after a few teething problems, has started to find her feet and come into herself. She’s very loyal and loves a cuddle, and Beverley wouldn’t give her up for the world.

Xena

This girl is a four year old girl who couldn’t live with her sister and didn’t like being part of a pack. She’s a fawn horsecoat with a bit of an attitude. Denis offered to pick her up for us and foster her, but she’s managed to wag and wiggle her way into his family’s hearts and it looks like she’s actually found the loveing home she needed. Lets keep our fingers crossed for her.

Konnishiki

Konnishiki was Xena’s sister and the two just didn’t get on. She’s seven years old. Good with people, other dogs, cats…in fact she loves the world. Meinir who took her, says ‘she is the most beautiful serene girl, who couldn’t be a better advert for the breed’. She’s affectionate and beautiful and Meinir who had never had a Shar Pei, is totally in love.

Alfie

Alfie was a big, grumbly lad, with a beautiful black horsecoat and a sparkle in his eye. He was having problems with the teenager in his home and reluctantly, his owners let him go. Juliet had fallen in love with Shar Pei’s because she is the cousin of Michelle who adopted our first dog Buster. Despite Alfie grumbling at Juliet all the time she tried to stroke him, she was not put off and she says he is the best thing ever to come into her life. He’s a football fan who drags her down to the pub on a Saturday and glories in all the attention he gets! He sleeps in her bed, cuddles at every opportunity and the two are just inseperable.

Buster

Buster is another Battersea dog who came to them with very bad eyes and a sad disposition. He had been kept tethered in a yard and was beaten up on a regular basis by a Rottweiler who was not tethered. Everyone fell in love with this graceful, sweet natured pale fawn horsecoat. The poor boy had to endure two operations before he could go to his new home with John and his young family.

He has settled in well and everybody in the house can’t believe how well he’s coped and what a lovely, gentle boy he is. They say he is with them forever and they just love him to bits!

Buster 2

Buster…was the first dog we ever re-homed. He arrived in Battersea dogs home grumpy, growly and very put out by being in kennels! We fostered him out to Michelle who was told he hated men, cats, vets, other dogs and practically everything else on the planet. Well, she fell in love and he loved her back…as well as Lee her partner, so the men bit wasn’t true! Buster also shared his food with her cat….so that wasn’t true either! Vets, other dogs and most other things on the planet?...hmmmm, well that is true!

Daisy

Daisy's re-homing has taken months to complete, but at last she is safe and sound with her new mum Kaylee in Northumberland. Daisy has several problems. She was involved in an accident in which she lost a leg and several toes on her remaining back leg on the same side, making her walking more difficult.
She's a little lost at the moment but Kaylee's other dogs are warming to her and she's starting to seek out a cuddle. (see your stories)

Daisy finally lost her courageous battle against cancer recently. Her mum misses her dreadfully and keeps her ashes next to her on her bedside table. It was an honour to know you Daisy and the love you brought into the lives you touched will be forever missed.

Minnie

Minnie. This sad little girl was found tied to a lamp post by the Police. She was in terrible condition, being almost bald, very thin and with very poor eyes. She was originally fostered by Cara Priestland. Cara was so worried about Minnie’s reaction to being bathed, she climbed in the bath with her! I assume she now has a clean glossy coat? Minnie is lucky enough to have been rehomed by Dee and Francisco Sa. They already have a five year old male Shar Pei called Taz and although she has a way to go, with operations required on her eyes as well as speying, she is improving daily. Apparently, she has the sweetest nature and despite being treated so cruelly, bears no grudges and is settling in well.

Henry

We got to hear about Henry from one of our supporters. He was a very sad, thin chocolate horsecoat who arrived in the local 'pound' just lost and lonely. I asked Billy Evans, who had lost a well loved boy called Suede, whether he would go and see this lad, assess him and hopefully foster him..need I say more? He's been called Henry now and is a really happy boy, great with Billy's little girl and has found his forever home. I have lots of lovely photo's of him and he's a real poser!

Boycie

Well Boycie is another Battersea dog, who’s sweet temperament managed to change some of the waryness of some people at Battersea, when dealing with Shar Pei. He’s adorable and was immediately snapped up by Dawn and her family. Dawn’s husband got on the road and drove over 260 miles….just to find out that Boycie was poorly and couldn’t go L At first they thought it was a viral infection but since then a small hernia was diagnosed. Anyway, Boycie is now ready to go and hopefully will soon be in his new home. I’ll keep you posted!

Unfortunately this little lad has had to move again recently, because his mum developed Asthma. She was very reluctant to let him go but realistically had to think of her health, so Boycie is now living in the South East with a new family. He's very, very happy chasing the kids around the garden and trying to eat the pet rabbits!

Jake

Jake's dad's relationship broke up and it was with a heavy heart his owner signed both Jake and Lucy over to us. Jake is a lovely boy. A beautiful
Apricot brushcoat of four, who's dad said he has no bad habits!!!hmmm...are we sure he's Shar Pei? He loves adults and children alike and has gone to live with Dawn and her family in Lydd. They're really excited about
having him.

Simba

Simba is a 5-year old red fawn Shar Pei. Nick and Carine wanted to have a companion for their 15-month old female Shar Pei, Mishka. When they got Simba, they were absolutely astonished on how well and quickly he settled down in his new home. Just a few weeks before, Nick and Carine thought that they would not make suitable candidates for rescuing and adopting a Shar Pei. They both work full time and they thought that a rescue Shar Pei would need full time care and therefore not tolerate being left on its own with another dog. But Simba proved them wrong. Nick and Carine are amazed on how well trained he is and hope that he will have a positive influence on Mishka...He is always looking to please them and absolutely adores his daily countryside walks and weekend hill walking with Mishka and his new family.

Holly

Holly was advertised on this site and was considered an 'aggressive' dog. Neill looked into her eyes and refused to believe it. When our pleas for a new home failed and she went onto death row, Neill jumped in the van, sped off and brought her home! She arrived a spitting, snarling fur ball and we slammed the van door shut and looked at each other.then we laughed! She's the sweetest little girl you could meet. Her problem was fear and awful emotional neglect before she went into kennels. Within days she was sharing our home, accepted by our own dogs and kissing everyone, especially Dillon, at every opportunity. Holly was hard to give up as she and I had became very close; but she has now gone to a wonderful new home where she is truly lloved.

We were given the terrible news recently, that Holly, who I fostered myself here at home, has died. She became ill on the Wednesday and sadly passed within 3 days from blood poisoning. It is suspected that she was bitten by a snake. Her Mum and Dad and Marley are all terribly upset, as am I. We loved you so much Holly. I can't believe I'll never see you again. Watch over us all and I'll see you again some time in the future.

Sonny

Sonny had a very sad beginning. His dad dropped dead and he was then placed first with the PDSA and then with the RSPCA. He was disorientated, sad and like a lot of Shar Pei in need, could be very aggressive to strangers. Unfortunately his aggressiveness was taken advantage of and he was placed outdoors by his new owner and used as a guard dog. Thankfully that gentleman realised that this is not the way Sonny's life should end and he signed him over to us. Neill went all the way up North to bring him to us. Now Sonny lives with Fred and Rita and is slowly building up his trust. He is very loving with his new mum and dad, is being re-trained and is now happily on the mend.

Bella

Bella was abandoned because she suffered some deafness and was VERY aggressive with other dogs. She was at first fostered by Phil and Gemma in Nottingham who worked tirelessly to see her through a very bad bout of kennel cough and Enteritis. Now she is living with Lyn who has the time and patience to help her get over her dislike of other animals. She will be going to classes and is at last starting to put on some weight. She's very happy with her new life and Lyn loves her to bits!

Bella:- Update. Sadly Bella started to think that her new mum was lower in the pack than herself and became ridiculously over protective. She had to be moved, but now lives with Michael and Kelly, where she's been put under a strict training regime, is given tons of love and is learning to ignore other dogs and be a more acceptable member of the doggie fraternity!

Sadly, Bella died recently...

China

China is a beautiful, happy, funny Shar Pei abandoned with another male Shar Pei at Battersea. Whatever happened to her it couldn't dull her exuberance for life, even when she got kennel cough.

She has gone to live at the seaside with a soppy boy called Kevin and her new mum and dad, Craig and Trina. There's a new baby on the way too so China will have another new and wonderful experience coming soon

Scout

Scout. This poor little boy with a huge heart went into shelter with China. He has a brilliant temperament but has ended up in the wars! At his new home the builder frightened him and then opened the door. Scouts new mum and dad spent the night searching for him and unfortunately when he was found he was badly injured. Thankfully, he has such a love of life and is so adored by Ursula and her husband that he is well on the way to recovery. Scout should be good as new in just a few weeks.

Lola

Lola is the first Brindle Shar Pei that I have come across and what a sad, nervous little girl she was. Signed over to the shelter, she was very unhappy and scared, however we got her out of there very quickly and her lovely nature and sweetness is just what her new family were looking for. She now spends her days being led around by her four year old charge and guarding gently the new sixteen week old baby. Wayne says she is wonderful and I'm so happy that she has found a kind and loving forever home.

Patty

Patty is five years old and slightly nervous, but once she knows you, she's a soft gentle dog who loves company. My other half picked her up from the shelter where she was staying and brought her home to us. Now she is going to live with Ashley and Kelly who have a large gentle Chow who needs an equally gentle, female companion. Patty is lucky that we were able to move her quickly enough that she didn't get too depressed in kennels. I hope she has a long and happy life.

Patty:- It is my sad duty to tell you all that Patty caught the Streptococci bacteria from a suspected cat wound and despite so much love and care, died shortly before Christmas. We all really miss her.

Tia

Has now found a permanent happy home with a couple who could cope with her possessiveness.

As her Dad works away from home, he has total peace of mind knowing that Tia would protect her mum with her life. She has settled now really well and loves the long walks she gets and the special one to one relationship she has with her owners. She is a good example of the 'right' dog being put with the   'right' home.

Wilson

Wilson had a bit of a bad start as he refused to get along with his new owners cat! Under the circumstances he has moved and is now a very happy boy living with Rachael and Craig, where he is top dog and has no pussy cats around him to 'upset' his world. He's settled now and everything in the garden looks rosy!

Winston

Winston's  beginnings were complicated to say the least!  He came from a home where he suffered from separation anxiety and when moved to his new home promptly escaped! He was on the run for 2 days and we all had our hearts in our mouths until he was caught. Well, now he lives happily with his new companion Flame, another boisterous young man, Christine and her daughter. He's growing, getting much more laid back and has better manners. Altogether, he's one happy boy!

Charlie

Charlie was one of the saddest cases I have EVER dealt with. He had been kept in a small cage for over 2 years after being savaged by another dog. Neill personally went and rescued him. He was dirty, full of scabs and fleas. Had problems walking and was agoraphobic. We asked David and Janice if they would foster him for us and help get him back on the road to recovery. He has had numerous visits to the vets for, among other things, stitch removal. After he was so badly savaged by the other dog, nobody bothered to remove any stitches??

Charlie is now known as Norman.  He has moved from his foster home where he was well loved and gone to live with Sue and her family. He now lives with two Shar Pei a boisterous douge de Bordeaux, cats, chickens and a very mean rodent! He is now really happy and has the home he deserves after what he's been through. Sue talks to him, as she does with all her animals, and he laps up the attention. He's also started to learn to play with the puppy, giving him a new lease of life. Sue says she loves Norman and thinks he's beautiful, despite all his scars. Lets hope this is his forever home, though I can not imagine Sue ever considering giving him up.

Bailey

Bailey was a rescue who had been homed twice but for various reasons hadn't settled. He now lives with a family in Nottingham who run a pub, and is a much happier and settled little lad.

Ruffles

Ruffles was very much loved, but for personal reasons had to be signed over to us. His world fell apart and like a lot of Shar Pei, he exhibited fear aggression at the sudden change in his situation. I spent a whole night talking to him gently, trying to persuade him not to bite me and cuddling him, even though he really didn't like me very much. Thankfully by the following day he had settled down a little and I was able to assess him properly. In our household we ALWAYS have spare muzzles and by using it, we could get close to Ruffles and reassure him, without getting bitten. A very kind couple are now fostering him, with a view to adoption. Let's wish him luck cos he's a lovely boy.

JEZ

Jez was taken to Battersea because he'd bitten a child, so it was important to make sure he was rehomed with a family where there were not risks to him or the people taking him on. At the moment we are arranging for him to go into Foster care, with a view to adoption, with people who understand his needs and respect his personality. If everything goes well, Jez won't be moving on again.

BEKS

Beks is a great big boy, who had no training and ended up an eight week old puppy in a ten month old body!!!! He's very big for his age and Dodie who also adopted Lucy last year, says he's just a big baby who needs a strong hand and lots of patience. At the moment Lucy is none too pleased with the entrance of this big lump, but Dodie is confident that within a very short while, they will be inseparable! If only we had more people like Dodie. Completely dedicated and determined to give it her best shot!

Ruffles

Ruffles is now fully adopted and castrated. He's a star in his new home and all the children love him to bits. Very good with kids that can be boisterous and very patient, he's a wonderful pet who deserves all the love and attention he now receives. He's a fabulous little boy and his mum knows how lucky she is to have him.

It is with great sadness that we have lost Ruffles. He was a great little character, full of beans to the end. Sadly he was put to sleep because of liver failure. His mum, dad, the kids and us will miss him greatly. Run free now little boy and know we are thinking of you always.

Bessie

Bessie was signed over to us very reluctantly because her mum was returning to New Zealand and didn't think Bessie could make the flight. It broke her heart, however she is very happy with Bessie's new family and Noah, Sarah's son just adores his new friend. At the moment this little lad is trying to stay awake long enough to hear Bessie snore. We've told him, when she's really comfy he wont have to stay awake, the noise will wake him!

Jack

Jack has now been adopted by his foster mum and has come on so well that she would like another Shar Pei to keep him company. He's full of fun, very cuddly and with lots of care and attention seems to be over the worst of his food allergies. He's at last put on weight and generally he's a much happier dog. His mum says we wouldn't recognise him! Just goes to show that with patience and a willingness to try different things, most dogs can lead happy active, lives. Best start looking for a companion for him.

Wilf & Mia

Wilf and Mia  Were in the care of the RSPCA as a cruelty case. Like a lot of Shar Pei, despite all the love and care from the staff at Blackberry farm, both dogs were suffering from the kennel environment. Thankfully, they were handed over to us and initially placed in foster care with our key worker Phil. After a little training, both dogs have been re-homed with Father Michael. He says they're settling in well, despite Mia throwing up on the church steps! Wilf is a big daft boy who just loves cuddles and Mia is a little protective over him; however they both love their new environment and find all the various visitors to the rectory great fun. Father Michael can't wait to see if they bite the Bishop when he visits..his last dog did!

Hooch

Hooch  Had an issue over his food bowl and sadly despite being re-homed by another organisation, we were asked to move him after only 3 weeks. He's come to live just up the road from me and although he gets possessive over food and his new owners bed.his new mum says he's adorable and just has to learn some manners! He's great with her kids, good with other dogs, good on a lead and already understands that there is no need to be such a misery around his food dish! Like so many problems with rescue dogs, given a little time to settle in, the problem disappears!

Harlow

Harlow is now known as MR Frederick Barlow. He is still with Sue who says he's a terrible dog who she loves to bits!! His hobbies are gardening (climbing trees so he can bark at the neighbours) animal husbandry (chasing the chickens and rabbits) food (he'll eat anything) collecting things (he's a terrible thief) and he just loves Sue's cats (preferably in his jaws). Sue has the patience of a saint because Mr Barlow IS a difficult Shar Pei, probably because of his early life. Either way, Sue just loves him.

George

George was taken into Battersea dog's home as his owners could no longer keep him. He was very frightened and vocal and the stress of the home had Kerrie really worried about him. Thankfully a wonderful couple came forward who had already rescued a Shar Pei with some quite serious issues. They opened their hearts and their home to George and he instantly took to their other dog. Although being well prepared for problems.there weren't any!!! He's a very handsome boy, as I think you'll agree and hopefully he will have a long and happy life.

Benson

Benson is a fabulous boy who sadly started to cause a severe allergic reaction to one of his 'parents' He's big, boisterous and has the usual Shar Pei protective personality. His owners wanted the best for him and took my advice and had him castrated BEFORE putting him up for re-homing. He's a loving dog who likes human company, loves cuddles and tickles. He's an excellent guard dog, loves football and hide and seek. Benson also has a love of 'smoking'? Apparently if someone smokes he tries to climb on their lap and inhale the smoke as it is breathed out. Benson is now in his new home and after a frosty beginning has settled down and loves his new Mum and Dad.

Levi

Levi went into Battersea with Maisey and she was his life. He looked to her for everything and became VERY stressed when he couldn't be with her. We found a loving home for both of them where they would be together forever. Unfortunately, Maisey had been badly neglected and required quite a big operation. Sadly she died on the operating table, leaving Levi alone and very upset. The new owners have decided to accept Levi alone and understand that it will be some time before he comes out of himself and trusts humans. They have promised him extra love and understanding and we all hope Maisey rests in a better place, watching over her one time friend.

Yum Yum

Yum Yum Is now called Kaira. she suffered from PMT and her owners didn't realise why periodically she became 'snappy'. We suggested evening primrose oil capsules in her food and getting her spayed but unfortunately her owners have lost their trust in her and decided to give her up. She's a bit of a madam, very headstrong and needs a firm hand.  She has a habit of not concentrating and often walks into things. She will eat anything except onions and red jelly babies and she hates travelling and postmen!  Like a lot of Shar Pei she will periodically try to push her boundaries and her new owners have been warned to 'stay in charge'. Her new mum and dad adore her and say her fear of travelling has long gone and she is a polite, loving little girl who they wouldn't be without.

Mauvee

Mauvee is a fabulous boy with one of the sweetest natures I have ever met. He went into Battersea dog's home because he had started fighting with his son. His owner did not want to give him up but was afraid the dogs would kill each other. When he arrived he was VERY scared and the trains running beside the home terrified him, however at no time did he try to bite me. He is now living with a new family where his special personality is appreciated. He couldn't be happier.

Chaplin

Chaplin Is a funny, lazy boy who likes nothing better than sleeping in the sun. His gentle nature has totally won over his new family. He occasionally wakes up long enough for a game, although he was a bit surprised when the family's existing dog Oscar decided after a game of chase to turn suddenly and playfully jump on his head! Since then Chaplin prefers to walk beside his mum, but its early days and I'm sure he'll be jumping around with the best of them...when he's awake!

Alfie & Oscar

Alfie and Oscar went into Battersea together because their mum just couldn't cope. She was terribly afraid they would be separated and in honesty, that very nearly happened. Thankfully, by a twist of fate, Oscar's potential new parents asked to see Alfie too and they were so touched at how they reacted to each other, they took them both! The latest reports have the 'boys' doing really well and their new mum and dad say they are just wonderful. Sometimes things are just 'meant to be', thankfully this was one of those times!

Scooby

Scooby Is a very big boy who is in foster care with a view to adoption. At present he is on his best behaviour, trying to make a good impression, which seems to be doing the trick J He is a very happy lad who just loves all the fuss he's getting in his new home and he is now learning how to walk properly on a lead and behave like a gentleman around other dogs. Lets all keep our fingers crossed that he manages to bounce into his foster mum and dad's hearts, and they decide to keep him.

Remy

Remy is a fabulous dog who despite needing an entropian operation, never showed the slightest aggression or fear of the vet or those in the kennels who attended him. He's polite and friendly with everyone and his new mummy was champing at the bit to get him home. She can't believe how much he loves a cuddle and her children were stunned at his wonderfully playful nature. Hopefully Remy will be well loved and looked after until it's his time to meet the other doggies in the sky.

Rolex

Rolex another Battersea dogs home dog, was homed with a wonderful couple who had always wanted a Shar Pei. They live in a country village and Rolex now goes on great long country walks with his new mum and dad. Rolley, as they affectionately call him, is going to be one of the jet set, cos his new parents also own a home abroad. As soon as he's had his jabs and got his passport he'll be winging his way all over the place...got room for a little one in your suitcase Rolex?

Hector

Hector is a super boy who has won over everyone's heart. A big softie, he greets the world with a smile and a bounce and he wags his tail so hard, his back end leaves the ground. A boy who just loves the girlies, he needs a little bit of training or a cold shower! He is now ready to go to his new home (after an operation) and his new mum and dad just can't wait!

Sacha & Kiki

Sacha and Kiki are two very sweet girls who sadly through neglect, have an awful lot of health issues. Kiki is the grumbly one of the two but is actually a big softie and Sacha is just sweetness on four legs. We were told that Sacha's mouth was in such a bad state that it was going to cost £3000 to put her right! Thankfully we found another vet who didn't want to buy a new house on the back of Sacha's problems, and today she had 20 teeth removed. This is just the start and is the reason YOUR donations are SO important. Sacha is getting over this first set of operations she will have to endure, but she's so much happier now. She may have to gum her Christmas dinner but she's pain free and much nicer to kiss!

Tiger

Tiger is in foster care and could be a difficult boy to re-home. He has trust issues and at the moment is pushing his boundaries. If he had been castrated at a sensible age, most of his problems wouldn't exist..sigh! Hopefully our Amanda will work her usual miracles and he will soon be the cuddly loving Shar Pei he wants to be. If you are interested in Tiger, PLEASE contact us in the new year

Portia

Portia came to us from the RSPCA and was involved in a cruelty case. She had lived with Rocky for many years, but there was no real bond between them. When we moved them into foster care it became apparent that for Portia's safety it would be better to separate them and thankfully Holly's mum and dad were prepared to offer her a home with Marley. She is doing really, really well and the grand old gentleman has used his charm again and totally won her over! She's fantastic at her obedience class and can hopefully help mend the hearts of her new mum and dad who are still missing Holly dreadfully.

Rocky

Rocky was Portia's companion for many years, but when they were homed together, sadly he resented her getting any attention and became aggressive towards her. In his new home he is a completely different dog and his new mummy and daddy are thrilled to bits with him. He's affectionate, caring and funny and hopefully he's found the love he needs and will be happy till the day he crosses over into the next world.

Brandon

Brandon is now Beau . He was left tied to a lamp post outside a shop. He was abandoned with a note around his neck saying his owners couldn't cope with him. Thankfully someone found our number and telephoned us and we set out into the night to rescue him. He is now called Beau and despite some early trust issues (hardly surprising) he has settled well in his new home. His adoptive mum says she couldn't imagine life without him and that he's the sweetest dog ever!

Lolly and Tilly

Lolly and Tilly are two very happy girls who were lucky enough to go from one loving home straight into another. They are both typically head strong Shar Pei 's who adore each other and are inseperable. Their new mum and dad have already learn't that if one wants to be selectively deaf.so will the other. They were both in excellent condition when gifted and will happily stay that way.

Buster

Buster is an older gentleman who had left home and when returned couldn't get on with his dad. No I'm not talking teenagers, I am talking Shar Pei ! He's strong and typical of his breed when it comes to other dogs and looking after the house. He loves playing, is funny and his mum and dad think he's wonderful No I'm not talking teenagers, I am talking Shar Pei ! He's strong and typical of his breed when it comes to other dogs and looking after the house. He loves playing, is funny and his mum and dad think he's wonderful. So many people think these dogs don't live long lives and at eleven even the vet thought we had it wrong. Here's to many more happy years!

Buster sadly died recently in his sleep. His new owners were devastated, but are grateful that they had the joy of his company, even if it were only for a short while.

Mooshu

Mooshu is a funny, happy boy who was given up reluctantly. He is great with people and loves toys and food. He's been very well trained and his new mum and dad think he's the perfect addition to their little family. He's one of those joyful dogs who it is easy to re-home and it was a pleasure to do so.

Bailey

Bailey has recently gone to live with his new mum and dad in Essex and they are thrilled to bits with him. He sadly had to leave his old home because he could not cope with a new baby. It is SO important that when a mother knows she is expecting, she involves her dog, otherwise these problems can occur. Having said this, his new family are thrilled to have him. At first they needed some help getting him over 'separation anxiety'. He was chewing at the front door and crying, as well as destroying curtains. This can be quite common when a dog is re-homed, but with patience and my help, he was trained out of this within a couple of weeks. Some dogs DO HAVE problems, but with love, care and patience, they can soon overcome the difficulties.

Teico

Teico sadly just didn't settle in his new home. His new owners hadn't realised what a commitment a 'young pup' can be when looking after young children and Teico badly missed the other dogs from his previous household. With very little persuasion Chewy's new family decided they would like him to join their budding menagerie, so he has now gone to live with Chewy and his family and is now a very, very happy boy. His patience with their young toddler belies all those who say Shar Pei aren't good with children, he has the patience of a saint. He loves his games with Chewy, the children and the cats and thankfully is no longer lonely. It's a shame when a dog has to be moved more than once and I ask all potential adopters to make sure that they can offer a good home and all the time required, before applying for adoption. Please think carefully before asking to adopt.

Teddy

Teddy was a lovely seven month old, when he was brought to our home because he was causing an allergy to the children in the home. He was very much loved and his owner dreaded parting with him. Because he was so young we decided it was best he came to us until he was castrated. He was also a Monochid so we knew the surgery could be difficult. He has now moved on and is very happy in his new home and has made good friends with their cat. Sadly, he still has a few health problems because he has developed a hernia, but he's young and healthy, so hopefully he will be right as rain very soon.

Chewy

Chewy went into Battersea dogs home and was immediately adored by the staff because of his lovely nature. Jukka had contacted me and wanted to adopt a Shar Pei for his family, especially his wife who had loved the breed for years, but they were not allowed to be imported into Finland . He is a lovely man with a big heart and had already adopted a young child and two cats; and I thought Chewy would be perfect for them. Within 24 hours he was on the phone singing Chewy's praises and saying that he felt as if the dog had been with them for years. They love him to bits, so there's another happy ending!

Blue

Blue is related to Lucy who we homed the first year we started up. He came to the rescue in a terrible condition. His coat was in such a poor state that he didn't have any fur and had open wounds. His new mummy didn't know where to start, so we recommended Neem shampoo, oil and cream and his mum could not believe the improvement. She said that he has a fantastic personality and already has his paws under the table. As she has rescued before she knows how hard it can be for a dog to readjust, but he's a star.

On a rather sad note, his new owner Emma Thompson of Arcan Road , Coppull, Lancashire , decided the price of 3 bottles of Neem shampoo (£18.00) meant she would rather not give the rescue a donation. We rely on trust, ie we trust people to donate for their dog so that we can continue to rescue, pay for operations, care for etc any Shar Pei in need. If you can not afford to donate to the rescue, can you afford to own a Shar Pei?

Brandy

Brandy was rescued from an RSPCA shelter but sadly was a bit too much for her new owners because she was too rough with their existing Shar Pei . They loved her and wanted the best for her so she has gone to live with Tom who lives alone and gives her his complete attention. Both love walking and Tom is learning to understand his boisterous companions little ways. He says they become firmer friends every day and the noise he makes when he's working on silver doesn't phase her at all. Hopefully they will have a long and very happy life together.

Star

Star is now called Shanklin after the famous football manager???? He had a bit of a hic-up with his facial operation. He had to have skin removed from his head so it didn't fall over his eyes and just as the stitches were due to be removed, the wound opened up. Hopefully as he is now completely healed, he can start to enjoy life to the full. His new family adore him and say he is the most affable chap and it seems like he has been with them forever. He has settled into his new life well and with his gentle personality, everybody in the household love him.

Chyna

Chyna came into our own home because her foster mum thought she had a lot of health problems. Obviously we had to assess her ourselves and decided most of her problems were due to her nervousness. We organised new surgery (she had had Entropian ops before) to remove more skin from her lids and layers from her corneas. After a few weeks with us she started to come out of herself. She's actually quite a little character and I've become very fond of her, but she will be moving to her new mummy on Easter Sunday. I'm sure she's going to be loved and well looked after, having visited her new mummy; who even sent her a get well card after the op. - Quick up date: Chyna is doing really, really well and her mum says she waited 3 years for the right dog and finally found her.

Chloe

Chloe was in a shelter in Whitby having been rescued from a garden shed, where she was held for six years. She was with a male Shar Pei who has since died and was just bred like a machine. It is incredibly sad that Shar Pei puppies sell for the money that they do, otherwise this type of cruelty wouldn't happen. Thankfully I met a wonderful lady who was prepared to drive hundreds of miles to go get her and offer her a new life. It won't be easy, as Chloe has to learn to trust again and be socialised, but with all the love and care she is going to be given, hopefully she will learn that some humans can be trusted. She is also about to undergo surgery for a double hernia caused by continuous breeding and we will spay her at that time too. We wish her all the love she deserves and a more gentle happy life. (See your stories)

Dana

Dana is another Battersea dog's home dog and is one of the sweetest Shar Pei 's they have ever dealt with. Due to veterinary neglect she has just had an operation on one of her eyes to help her see better and will presently undergo more surgery to remove some of the overlapping skin on her forehead. She has also been spayed. She's such a happy little Pei any of our adopters would be happy to take her on, but her new mummy is waiting in the wings, desperate to bring her into her new home. With another Pei for company and lots and lots of love and cuddles waiting for her, I think she'll be a very happy little Shar Pei .

Frankie and Troy

Frankie and Troy are two lovely boys who are due to be re-homed as soon as her new owners return from honeymoon. They are two lovely dogs with wonderful temperaments and have a very close bond with each other. Their previous owner really didn't want them separated. They are well loved and in good condition, but sadly their mum can no longer keep them. Frankie was rescued by his present owner from being shut in the basement of a pub, never walked and finally abandoned and his mummy chose our organisation because she knew we would keep the boys together and always stay in touch with their new owners. When we have news of how they're settling in, in their new home, be sure we will update you.

Rogan

Rogan Was homed two years ago but I've only just realised that I hadn't included him on the website. So here is a picture of him. His new owners say that when he arrived he was a one dog demolition team, however he has now settled down and his mum and dad can now start buying new furniture! His dad says he's the best thing that ever happened to them and is such a glutton for punishment that he says 'they are very willing to adopt another one'.

Saffi

Saffi's story is on the 'our friends' page. We'd like you to know she has settled in really well in her new home and has poor Jake eating out of her paws. She's an absolute whirlwind, says her new mum and keeps everyone on their toes! She's at last started growing into her long legs and has become a bit of a 'daddy's girl'. Thankfully this is now another very happy ending for a little girl who ended up in a shelter, through no fault of her own.

Chi-Chi

Chi-Chi was just a baby when she came into rescue.. She had a serious skin condition and her new owners couldn't cope so back she came into our own home. As those who read the website are aware, we have a dog called Dillon, who had a terrible past, is blind in one eye and is brain damaged. Dillon never learnt to play and though most of his problems have been resolved it was just something that he didn't understand. Chi has changed all that. She just refused to give up and kept bopping his nose with her front paw until he reacted..now they play, ALL DAY!! She is a joy, despite having a penchant for eating our bedding and a hole in Neill's favourite leather chair, we have now decided to adopt her ourselves.

Liam & Joop

Liam and Joop turned out to be VERY difficult to home, because there were two of them and Liam has some health problems. I will not just home a dog because someone wants it..it MUST be the right home. Thankfully I finally found the right home and although their names have changed, they have settled in well and their new mummy adores them. It's a shame that so many people will not take two dogs together and then contact me after having a Shar Pei from me and want another one !! We often need people willing to take two dogs..think about it.

Sawyer

Sawyer came to my attention because of behavioural problems his owners were having with him. Sadly, despite trying really hard with him it was decided it was best to give him up and he is now living with a couple who have no children and are thrilled to have such a young pup. He has settled really well and a lot of his problems have vanished, as so often happens. Having lost a dog recently his new owners are very happy and are very capable of dealing with any problems that may arise.

Benji

Benji is another Battersea Dog (& Cats) Home dog, who was gifted to the home for various reasons. He was a bit of a handful at first and very scared of his environment, however he has been castrated and has now moved to his forever home. His new mum and dad say he's VERY affectionate and loves patrolling the garden fence barking at anyone who dares to go past. He's settled in really well and they say they are proud to own such an affectionate, happy little boy.

Grace

Grace has a lovely nature and has been adopted by Shankley's mum and dad. She's a big girl with a lovely , sweet temperament. Shankley can't believe his luck, neither can her new mum and dad. She has taken a little while to settle and has had to be re-trained because she became terrified of being abandoned again and started showing aggression to strangers. Thankfully her new mum and dad wanted to work through this and came to me for advice. The last I heard, things were getting much better and I am grateful that her new mum and dad have shown patience and understanding in completing her adoption.

Cracker

Cracker is yet another Battersea dog who has a wonderful temperament, is a food monster and has rather funny ears?! They stick out a bit, giving him the vague resemblance to Yoda in Star Wars. I met him and got the usual Shar Pei grumble until the biscuits came out, then he was the sweetest pup on the planet! Cracker is being fostered at the moment, but hopefully his new mummy will decide he's worth every penny and adopt soon.

Leon

Leon went into Battersea at only eleven months old. He had no real problems other than ears which had been a bit neglected and therefore could prove problematic in the future. Thankfully we had a adopter who was looking for a companion for her little girl Shar Pei who also has ear problems, so the necessary dedication to flushing and cleaning was already part of her routine. When Missie met Leon she was thrilled and although Leon had shown that he had no knowledge of play, she soon changed that and dragged him all over the place. I sincerely hope that he is now in his 'forever' home.
