Friends Of Shar-Pei-RescueKendo.....by his mum
You were Merlinscave Spellcaster and you came into the world on the 8 th December 2003, and we christened you Kendo. Your breeder had had an accident when her French bulldog had mated with her Shar pei and so before you we had little Onyx, a brindle coloured cross whom unfortunately died in Grace's arms in November at about 3 months old. The breeder offered us the pick of the litter and Grace chose you. You were the grumpiest puppy of all of them and didn't like being picked up or cuddled but you also didn't need to have your eyes tacked up. We brought you home when you were about 5 weeks old and you were sick in the car in the way back. You really weren't easy, you had a strong will and a mind of your own but you were soon house trained and settled into the family routine. I worried that I shouldn't have allowed the girls to have you because I knew as teenagers they would grow up and leave home and you would be left with me. With my busy job and being away from home a lot I felt really sorry for you. And the novelty did wear off a bit although you were always well loved darling. I used to wish you were a bit more affectionate but you were very much your own man and just didn't want a lot of physical contact, so sad that you were getting to like it a bit more when you got older. We kind of gave up really on the training, we couldn't ever let you off the lead because you ran away and wouldn't come back, we tried all sorts of training methods but nothing really worked. You were such a good boy though, We shared many happy moments – walking on Purdown and at ‘Nuff Mills' where you used to have a paddle in the river. You were terrible at the vets, it was a nightmare, every trip to the vets was awful and I usually ended up in tears. You couldn't resist a chocolate bone from Pets at Home and I probably gave you far too many. You made lots of Shar Pei noises, snorts, snores and sneezes; the funniest thing was how you used to sneeze when you were excited usually all over someone's feet. You used to slobber a lot but never really licked people. I got so exasperated with you at times especially when I was caring for you on my own, it was hard work and I thought about putting you up for rescue – that's when I got in touch with Roma who gave me a right bollocking for being such an irresponsible dog owner and she was quite right, I loved you so much and I wanted you to be happy. We muddled along following Roma's advice and we managed Ok didn't we. I was away a lot but you were always there to greet me, always forgave me for leaving you. You used to give me such a warm welcome, you used to run round in circles and gave me your toys. You only liked soft cuddly toys and mostly you just tore them apart and took out the stuffing so most of the ones which we have left are just empty bits of cloth. You used to throw things as well – especially bits of chewed up rawhide, one day you through it so hard you made a bruise of Grace's leg. You treated each one of us differently. Grace was the person you did rough play with, Amber you thought you were ahead of in the pecking order so you did used to go in her bedroom. Amber looked after you when I went away and often took you out for walks. Amber loved you very much and was very sad that she wasn't here to say goodbye.
Oh Kenny, I couldn't have put you through all that and I couldn't have afforded it anyway, you would have hated living at the vets as well. She took you away to sedate you and we heard the Shar pei yelp and we knew it was you, but the vet brought you back and said she was sorry and it was just that she had held your collar – we all know you didn't like having your collar felt. We had you with us for another ten minutes, we told you how much we loves you and that we would see you all again soon, we told you that Pucheen would be there to welcome you at the Rainbow bridge – that you would meet Molly our old cat who you never knew. I said that I knew my mum would look after you as she always loved dogs and you'd met Penny and Flossie, my old dogs. Then I took you to the door and the vet led you away.
My personal belief is that they come back to us in spirit; that their will to protect and stay by us is so strong that once they have adjusted to life on the other side, they return to help keep us safe. I knew Kendo well. He was a grumpy, a little overweight, stupidly loveable boy who Nina was convinced would have a punch up with my lot…but he didn't? I'll always remember the joy him and his mum shared when I persuaded her to let him run off lead with my boys and girls on the levels and his embarrassment when he got a little too enthusiastic and tripped over his own feet and ended up in a ball! I remember when he stayed that at first he slept on the landing. He watched silently as ours came in and settled onto the bed and after a little encouragement, crept in beside me and slept in the basket next to my head. He used to growl when I oiled his nose, snapped once when I grabbed his collar and really tried to eat me when I had to hold him very tight to have his nails clipped…but he didn't bear grudges, and I think he actually liked me. When I stood still or sat down, he'd come and sit on my feet and let me rub his ears. Despite his demeanor , I think he looked forward to coming to see us and his existence forged a friendship with his mum that I value very much. I know he's gone home…he's far too lazy to chase ghost rabbits for very long and even though Nina may only sense him, I'll see him trotting up the path with her when she next visits. Our dogs do not ask much of us. I know Nina felt guilty when she had to leave him; but he loved her..that was enough!

SHAR PEI FRIENDLY VETS Please do tell any vet reccommended here where you saw their details. I have recently visited a vet in Somerset called The Polden Hills Veterinary Centre. I was given the full tour (available to anybody wishing to register) and not only is it wonderfully set out, but I realised I had a connection with one of the vets running the practice, as he used to work at Chase. This is truly a shar pei friendly vets and I was also pleased to learn that for any breed registering that they are not familiar with, they will immediately bone up on it, so that not just the medical care is administered, but the emotional support is also there. Both vets live above the premises, so any animal unfortunate enough to have to stay the night is moved upstairs with them. This means that your pet is never left alone and everything needed is on hand. John and Margaret understand animals and have a loving, hands on approach to veterinary care. They are open to suggestions and allow those who want to stay with their pet both before the operation and post operative the opportunity to do so. Click on Logo for link to their site
Like most Shar Pei owners, finding a Shar Pei friendly vet is worth its weight in gold. Thankfully we found Cobie Loubser at Chase veterinary practice and for those in our area we can definitely recommend him. All the vets at Chase have shown enormous kindness to our rescues. Naomi and Mark also deserve a mention because their professionalism and patience with dogs that have often never been handled by a vet, has been second to none. All our rescues have been treated with the same warmth and that goes for the Shar Peis who are scared and difficult, the real sweeties and the ones who we start apologising for before we even get through the door! Cobie and his staff have had to deal with Entropion operations (his skill at this particular operation is second to none) Hernia's, Skin problems, neutering, thyroid complaints and sadly euthanasia and he has treated all our dogs with the kindness and respect they deserve. As a rescue, we can not recommend him and his staff enough. The Chase Veterinary Group 89-91, Seaside Road Eastbourne . Tel: 01323 639331 Arcacia Villas, 337 Seaside Road , Eastbourne . The Old Village Surgery These are absolutely brilliant vets who always fit you in when you need an appointment - I have used them for about 20 years now and would not use any other practice. The practice is also VERY Shar Pei ( and Boxer) friendly . All the staff and the girls in reception are lovely.
******************************************************************* Shar-Pei-Rescue has come on in leaps and bounds but couldn't cope without the help of various interested parties who support our work. Despite what people think, having more than one dog does have its benefits. Leaving a dog alone can be for some, very traumatic, but with another animal in the house these problems invariably just disappear. A dog knows how to play with another dog and exercise becomes a doddle when dogs have been scooting around the garden all day, chasing each other! So thank you everyone who helps to support the rescue and this picture of such happy dogs, shows how more than one dog can be a joy for you and your family.
